''Die Opernprobe'' (The opera rehearsal), also titled ''Die vornehmen Dilettanten'' (The distinguished dilettantes), is a comic opera (''Spieloper'') in one act by Albert Lortzing, to a libretto which he adapted from a play by Philippe Poisson (actor), Philippe Poisson which had been translated by . The premiere was on 20 January 1851 at the Oper Frankfurt. History Lortzing was a successful composer of ''Spielopern'', comic operas with spoken dialogue, from ''Zar und Zimmermann'' in 1837 to ''Der Waffenschmied'' in 1846. He composed ''Die Opernprobe'' in 1850 when he was director of the in Berlin, which rarely played operas. For the libretto, he freely adapted a 1733 French play by Philippe Poisson, ''L'Impromptu de campagne'', which Johann Friedrich Jünger had translated to German in 1794, as ''Die Komödie aus dem Stegreif'' (The improvised comedy). Spieloper
In the 19th century, Spieloper ('opera play') was understood to mean a light opera genre, developed from Singspiel. Works typical of the genre include those by Albert Lortzing, such as ''Zar und Zimmermann'', and Otto Nicolai's '' The Merry Wives of Windsor''. A key difference between Spieloper and Singspiel on the one hand, and opera buffa on the other, is that the two former genres contain spoken dialogues instead of recitatives, which is why Conradin Kreutzer's '' Das Nachtlager in Granada'' and Friedrich von Flotow's ''Martha'' do not belong to this genre. Technically, a Spieloper is an opera with a comic plot and light, pleasant music, differentiating it from more serious opera. Walter Berry (8 April 1929 – 27 October 2000) was an Austrian lyric bass-baritone who enjoyed a prominent career in opera. He has been cited as one of several exemplary operatic bass-baritones of his era. Professional career Walter Berry was born in Vienna. He studied voice at the Vienna Music Academy and made his stage debut with the Vienna State Opera in 1947. He became a permanent member of the company in 1950, remaining with that ensemble for his entire career, although he undertook frequent guest appearances elsewhere in Europe and in the UK. Harry Gustaf Nikolai Gädda, known professionally as Nicolai Gedda (11 July 1925 – 8 January 2017), was a Swedish operatic tenor. Debuting in 1951, Gedda had a long and successful career in opera until the age of 77 in June 2003, when he made his final operatic recording. Otmar Suitner (German pronunciation: ɔtmaʁ zuˈiːtnɐ 16 May 1922 – 8 January 2010) was an Austrian conductor who spent most of his professional career in East Germany. He was born in Innsbruck and died in Berlin. He was Principal Conductor of the Staatskapelle Dresden from 1960 to 1964, and then Music Director at the Berlin State Opera in East Berlin from 1964 to 1990.
