Dewar's () is a brand of blended Scotch whisky owned by Bacardi, which claims the brand's "White Label" to be the top-selling blended Scotch in the US. History The Dewar's whisky brand was created by John Dewar, Sr. in 1846. Under the control of his two sons, John A. The distillery is located on the eastern outskirts of Aberfeldy, on the southern bank of the upper Tay. The demand for barley as a basic foodstuff during World War I led to the distillery being closed from 1917 to 1919. The Second World War also caused barley supplies to be cut, and the distillery was again forced to shut down for some of this period. Supply to final markets was kept up by reducing the period whisky was laid up from 7 years to 3. In 1925, the distillery passed to The Distillers Company when Dewars amalgamated with it. In 1972 the distillery was enlarged, and the old stills were replaced by four new steam heated stills. Ownership later passed to Grand Metropolitan, which became Diageo in 1997. Thomas Robert "Tommy" Dewar, 1st Baron Dewar (6 January 1864 – 11 April 1930) was a Scottish whisky distiller who, along with his brother John Dewar, built their family label, Dewar's, into an international success. They blended their whisky to make it more appealing to the international palate and Dewar demonstrated particular skills in marketing, travelling the world to find new markets and promote his product, exploiting romantic images of Scotland and tartan in his advertising. Early life Dewar was born in 1864 in Perth, Scotland. The son of John Dewar, Sr., he was exposed at a very young age to the spirit industry in Scotland as his father founded the John Dewar & Sons, Ltd. Ramble Round The Globe
''A Ramble Round the Globe'' is an 1894 book by Thomas Dewar detailing his journey around the world publicizing Dewars Scotch Whisky. The book is at least purportedly Dewar's journal, written solely for his friends who "wanted to know 'all about it.'" Dewar's travels Dewar's trip was motivated not only by a desire to market his brand, but also by medical imperatives: Dewar had been battling a persistent cold that had been growing worse, and his doctor suggested that a warmer climate could rid him of this threatening cold. The journey departed from Speyside in Scotland and embarked for Boston in the US, then onto New York, Washington, Chicago and San Francisco. He then sailed to Hawaii, Fiji, New Zealand, Australia, China and Hong Kong. The writings both praise and chastise his surroundings as he traverses through the very differing cities around the world. John Dewar, 1st Baron Forteviot
John Alexander Dewar, 1st Baron Forteviot (6 June 1856 – 23 November 1929) was a Scottish businessman, elder son of the founder of Dewar's Scotch Whisky and a Liberal Member of Parliament. He is buried with his family in the family plot at Aberdalgie just west of Perth, near the family seat of Dupplin. Family John Dewar Jr. was the son of John Dewar, Sr. and Jane Gow, and older brother of Thomas Dewar, 1st Baron Dewar. Royal Brackla distillery is a Highland Scotch whisky distillery on the Cawdor Estate, near Nairn in Scotland. The distillery is operated by John Dewar & Sons Ltd for Bacardi. History The Brackla distillery was built in 1812 by Captain William Fraser of Brackla House on the estate of Cawdor Castle. Brackla whisky was selected by King William IV to be his whisky at the royal court. In 1833 Brackla Distillery became the first whisky distillery to be granted a royal warrant by the king.
