Devil's Broom
"Devil's Broom" is the third single from Joseph Arthur's fourth studio album ''Our Shadows Will Remain''. The single was released on February 13, 2006, in the UK to coincide with his live dates at Shepherd's Bush Empire. It was released on CD and 7" as well as digital download bundles. The CD single's B-side, "Papa", is Joseph's touching ode to his father. He played the song live as early as 1998. In a positive review for ''AngryApe'', David Adair wrote, "'Devil's Broom' represents another stroke of understated genius from the musical palette of Arthur. Mundane and emotive Morrissey styled lyricism and projected singing with a speckle of the troubled cry of Jeff Buckley, is propped up by a wandering accompaniment that Echo & the Bunnymen used to such startling effect." A video for the song was produced, directed by Noaz Deshe. It shows Joseph being dragged through a city interspersed with footage of a female lover he longs to be near. Joseph Arthur
Joseph Arthur (born September 28, 1971) is an American singer-songwriter and artist from Akron, Ohio. He is best known for his solo material, and as a member of Fistful of Mercy and RNDM. Arthur has built his reputation over the years through critically acclaimed releases and constant touring; his unique solo live performances often incorporate the use of a number of distortion and loop pedals, and his shows are recorded live at the soundboard and made available to concertgoers immediately following the show on recordable media. Arthur was discovered by Peter Gabriel in the mid-1990s, and signed to Gabriel's Real World label as the first North American artist on the label's roster. Scala is a former cinema turned nightclub and live music venue in Pentonville Road, London, England, near King's Cross railway station. History The Scala was originally built as a cinema to the designs of H Courtney Constantine, but construction was interrupted by the First World War and it spent some time being used to manufacture aircraft parts, and as a labour exchange for demobilised troops before opening in 1920 as the King's Cross Cinema. The cinema changed hands and names several times through its life and also changed focus, ranging from mainstream to art-house to adult film over 70 years, as well as spending a short time as a primatarium. ''Our Shadows Will Remain'' is the fourth studio album by Joseph Arthur. The album was released in the US on September 28, 2004, on 12" vinyl and October 12, 2004, on CD, then in the UK on July 11, 2005, on CD and double 12" vinyl. The recording sessions also spawned the companion EP, ''And the Thieves Are Gone.'' There were four singles released when the album was picked up for UK distribution by 14th Floor Records. An extensive nationwide tour of the US followed the album's release, including dates with Joan Wasser. In 2005, Arthur went on a brief tour throughout Europe with R.E.M.
