Desperate Measures (2013 Australian TV Series)
''Desperate Measures'' is an Australian television documentary series of historical and political matters relating to Indigenous Australians, with three series that aired on National Indigenous Television (NITV) between 2013 and 2018. Overview ''Desperate measures'' tells the stories of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people who have been part of political movements and/or who have made an impact on Australian Government policies. Three series went to air on NITV: Series 1 in 2013; Series 2 in 2014; and Series 3 in 2017–18. The series is used as a reference in academic papers and on websites, such as Redfern Oral History, as well as being kept as video resources in academic libraries. Indigenous Australians
Indigenous Australians or Australian First Nations are people with familial heritage from, and membership in, the ethnic groups that lived in Australia before British colonisation. They consist of two distinct groups: the Aboriginal peoples of the Australian mainland and Tasmania, and the Torres Strait Islander peoples from the seas between Queensland and Papua New Guinea. The term Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples or the person's specific cultural group, is often preferred, though the terms First Nations of Australia, First Peoples of Australia and First Australians are also increasingly common; 812,728 people self-identified as being of Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander origin in the 2021 Australian Census, representing 3.2% of the total population of Australia. Redfern All Blacks
The Redfern All Blacks, also known as RABs or Redfern, are an Indigenous Australian semi-professional rugby league club based in Redfern, New South Wales, They are a part of the South Sydney District Junior Rugby Football League. History Redfern All Blacks is the oldest Indigenous Australian rugby league club in Australia. It was co-founded in 1938 by Bill Onus and Wesley Simms, during the Great Depression. Some reports suggest that the club was officially established by a group of non-Aboriginal and Aboriginal people in 1944. SBS is a national public television network in Australia. Launched on 24 October 1980, it is the responsibility of SBS's television division, and is available nationally. Cairns
Cairns (, ) is a city in Queensland, Australia, on the tropical north east coast of Far North Queensland. The population in June 2019 was 153,952, having grown on average 1.02% annually over the preceding five years. The city is the 5th-most-populous in Queensland, and 15th in Australia. Malay Town
Malay Town was the unofficial name for an area of Cairns in Australia. It was built around Alligator Creek by Malay workers in the early 1900s, but by the 1920s was mainly populated by Torres Strait Islanders, with many immigrant communities also represented. History The town itself was surrounded by swamp and mangroves and bordered the city dump. It was described in the following terms: There were, though, some post-World War I German migrants and many living in the town learned multiple languages from their neighbours. Coloured Stone
Coloured Stone is an Aboriginal Australian band whose members originate from the Koonibba Mission, west of Ceduna, South Australia. The band performs using guitar, bass, drums, and Aboriginal instruments – didjeridu, bundawuthada (gong stone) and clap sticks – to play traditional music. "Mouydjengara" is a whale- dreaming song of the Mirning people. Background and members The original Coloured Stone band members were three brothers, Bunna Lawrie (drums, lead vocals, songwriter), and Neil Coaby (rhythm guitar and backing vocals) and Mackie Coaby (bass guitar and backing vocals), and their nephew, Bruce (aka Bunny) Mundy (lead guitar and backing vocals). Donald Thomson
Donald Finlay Fergusson Thomson, OBE (26 June 1901 – 12 May 1970) was an Australian anthropologist and ornithologist who was largely responsible for turning the Caledon Bay crisis into a "decisive moment in the history of Aboriginal-European relations". He is remembered as a friend of the Yolngu people, and as a champion of understanding, by non-Indigenous Australians, of the culture and society of Indigenous Australians. Early life Thomson studied zoology and botany at the University of Melbourne. Kaurareg
Kaurareg (alt. Kauraraiga, plural Kauraraigalai, Kauraregale) is the name for one of the Indigenous Australian groups collectively known as Torres Strait Islander peoples, although many or most identify as Aboriginal Australians. They are the traditional owners of Thursday Island (Waiben) as well as a number of Torres Strait Islands. The Kaurareg are lower Western Islanders, based on the Muralag group. In common with the other peoples of the Torres Strait Island, they commanded impressive sailing outrigger canoe technology, traded throughout the Straits, fishing and trading with other Torres Strait Island groups. Barbara McGrady
Barbara McGrady (born 1950) is an Aboriginal Australian photographer and photojournalist based in Sydney, New South Wales. She is the first Indigenous Australian photojournalist. Early life and education Barbara McGrady was born in 1950 in Mungindi, New South Wales. She is a Gomeroi (Gamilaraay) and Murri woman, from the north-west of NSW and southern Queensland. Her aunts were removed from the family and sent to Cootamundra Girls' Home, while the men were sent to work as indentured labourers. McGrady started taking photos of her family and surroundings as a teenager with a camera her mother bought her. Her fascination with photo journalism was sparked by black and white photographs of black sportsmen and sportswomen in magazines like ''Time'' and ''Life'', ''National Geographic'', ''Esquire'' and '' Reader's Digest''.
