Desmognathus Pascagoula
''Desmognathus'' is a genus of lungless salamanders in the family Plethodontidae known as dusky salamanders. They range from Texas to the eastern United States and to south-eastern Canada. Characteristics Species of the genus ''Desmognathus'' have a unique jaw-opening mechanism where the lower jaw is stationary and the skull swings open. There are additional stalked condyles, an atlanto-mandibular ligament, along with other skeletal and musculature features that have evolved to accompany this type of jaw-opening mechanism. Additionally, they are known to exhibit maternal care by brooding over their eggs. Species This genus Genus ( plural genera ) is a taxonomic rank used in the biological classification of extant taxon, living and fossil organisms as well as Virus classification#ICTV classification, viruses. He was dedicated to expanding the natural history collections of the Smithsonian which he increased from 6,000 specimens in 1850 to over 2 million by the time of his death. He published over 1,000 works during his lifetime. Early life and education Spencer Fullerton Baird was born in Reading, Pennsylvania in 1823. His mother was a member of the prominent Philadelphia Biddle family; he was a nephew of Speaker of the Pennsylvania Senate Charles B. Desmognathus Valentinei
Valentine's southern dusky salamander (''Desmognathus valentinei'') is a species of salamander in the family Plethodontidae. It is endemic to the southeastern United States. Taxonomy It was previously thought to be a population of Holbrook's southern dusky salamander (''D. holbrooki''), with both species being grouped together as the southern dusky salamander. However, a 2008 study found ''D. holbrooki'' as previously defined to be polyphyletic and containing multiple undescribed species. One of these undescribed species was formally described in 2017 as ''D. valentinei''. It is named in honor of Barry D. Valentine, a biologist and former faculty emeritus at Ohio State University, who had first suggested the distinctiveness of this taxon in the early 1960s. Distribution It is found in the Gulf Coast region, where it ranges from the Mobile Bay region of Alabama west through the southern half of Mississippi to eastern Louisiana Louisiana , group=pronunciation (French: ...

Desmognathus Quadramaculatus
The blackbelly salamander (''Desmognathus quadramaculatus'') is a species of salamander in the family Plethodontidae. It is endemic to the United States. Its natural habitats are rivers, intermittent rivers, and freshwater springs. It is threatened by habitat loss. Description The blackbelly salamander is a medium-sized salamander growing to about long. It is sturdily built with a long tail. The ground colour is dark brown or black with two rows of small pale spots along each side of the back. The underside is usually black but may have pale flecks in young individuals. They are highly variable in color, with the ground color ranging from a light gray to deep black. Their color has been recorded in one study to be related to their habitat. Populations that are only a few meters away can have drastic differences phenotypically, depending on the habitat differences. This study showed that two populations in the same stream were vastly different in color. This could be related to ...

Desmognathus Planiceps
The flat-headed salamander (''Desmognathus planiceps'') is a species of salamander in the family Plethodontidae. It is endemic to the state of Virginia in the United States. Taxonomy ''Desmognathus planiceps'' was described in 1955 but was later reclassified as synonymous with the northern dusky salamander (''D. fuscus''). However, a phylogenetic study in 2008 affirmed it as being a distinct species, and it was thus revived as such. Distribution It is found in the Blue Ridge Mountains and adjacent Piedmont of Virginia, ranging from southern Roanoke County south to the headwaters of the Dan River in Patrick County and east to Pittsylvania County. Potential specimens referable to this species are also known from the New River drainage in Floyd County and potentially adjacent regions of North Carolina. Description ''Desmognathus planiceps'' closely resembles many other species in the genus ''Desmognathus ''Desmognathus'' is a genus of lungless salamanders in the family P ...

Desmognathus Ocoee
The ocoee salamander (''Desmognathus ocoee'') is a species of salamander in the family Plethodontidae. This salamander has a variety of colors and patterns, and got its name from Tennessee state wildflower. Its natural habitats are temperate forests, rivers, intermittent rivers, freshwater springs and wet rocks in mountainous areas of the Southeastern United States. It was first described by Nicholls in 1949. They are territorial and feed on small invertabrates. It is widely distributed in the Midwest and is listed as "Least Concern" by IUCN. Description The ocoee salamander (''Desmognathus ocoee'') is a small mountain dusky salamander that exhibits a wide range of colors and patterns. The species got its name from the Tennessee state wildflower and symbol ''Passiflora incarnata'' (passionflower), which is termed “ocoee” in the Cherokee tribe. The Ocoee River and the Ocoee salamander were thus named after the Cherokee word for passionflower. Some individuals have distinct ...
