Deshaies
Deshaies ( French: ) is a commune in the French overseas region and department of Guadeloupe, in the Lesser Antilles. It is on the northwest coast of Basse-Terre Island. The inhabitants are called ''Deshaisiens''. History Deshaies, and its littoral zone of the Large Cape, preserve the vestiges of the primitive vegetation of Guadeloupe at the time of Christopher Columbus's arrival on November 4, 1493. The deepest bay of all the Caribbean coast and best naturally protected, it was used as shelter to the adventurers of pirates and other corsairs, and there is said to be treasure on the island. In 1635, colonists landed at Allègre point, at the north end of the island. This part of the coast is very damp; Deshaies is an integral part of a wooded territory extending from Pointe Noire to Baie-Mahault. Jardin Botanique De Deshaies
The Jardin botanique de Deshaies is a botanical garden located in Deshaies, Guadeloupe. It is open daily from 9h00 until 16h30. There is an admission fee of €15.90 for adults or €10.90 for children, with a group discount also available. Students €8.40. The site is 7 hectares and contains plant species from all over the world. History From 1979-1986 the site was home to French comedian Coluche, having previously been populated with rare plants by Guy Blandin. After Coluche's death in 1986, nurseryman Michel Gaillard purchased the property in 1991 with the idea of creating a botanical garden. The garden opened in 2001, after 15 months of work by over 40 employees. Saint Marie (fictional Island)
Saint Marie is a fictional island in the Lesser Antilles which serves as the setting for the BBC crime drama television series '' Death in Paradise''. Premise Saint Marie is described in Episode 3.3 as a "pretty island" that is "situated in the Eastern Caribbean Sea" and "one-tenth the size of its north-west neighbour Guadeloupe", which would make Saint Marie about in size. It is described in Episode 4.5 as being from Martinique. The island is a British Overseas Territory, but was handed over to the British from the French only in the 1970s, so that about 30% of its people are French citizens, with the French language still widely spoken. Michel Gérard Joseph Colucci (, ; 28 October 1944 – 19 June 1986), better known under his stage name Coluche (), was a French stage comedian and cinema actor.
