Derzhava (yacht)
The Derzhava (russian: Держава, English translation: ''independent, self-sufficient nation-state'') was a royal yacht of the House of Romanov. It was laid down in 1866 and launched in 1871. The ''Derzhava'' (Baltic Sea) and the '' Livadia'' (Black Sea) were the last wooden paddle steamers built for the Romanovs. The ''Derzhava'' served the Romanovs until 1898, when she was converted into a training ship and renamed ''Dvina''. History The ''Derzhava'' was laid down at the New Admiralty, Saint Petersburg by Alexander II of Russia. I. S. Dmitriev was appointed as master shipwright. The design of ''Derzhava'' was based on the British royal yacht HMY ''Victoria and Albert''. She was launched five years later, in July 1871. Her two steam engines, of local design and make, were rated at 720 horsepower, and enabled a maximum speed of 16.72 knots. The Ukrainian State ( uk, Українська Держава, translit=Ukrainska Derzhava), sometimes also called the Second Hetmanate ( uk, Другий Гетьманат, translit=Druhyi Hetmanat, link=no), was an anti-Bolshevik government that existed on most of the modern territory of Ukraine (except for Western Ukraine) from 29 April to 14 December 1918. It was installed by German military authorities after the socialist-leaning Central Council of the Ukrainian People's Republic was dispersed on 28 April 1918. Ukraine turned into a provisional dictatorship of Hetman of Ukraine Pavlo Skoropadskyi, who outlawed all socialist-oriented political parties, creating an anti-Bolshevik front with the Russian State. Mariusz Zaruski
Mariusz Zaruski (18 January 1867 – 8 April 1941) was a brigadier-general in the Polish Army, a pioneer of Polish sports yachting, an outstanding climber of the winter and caves of Tatra Mountains. He was a photographer, painter, poet and writer, a seamen and traveler, a conspirator, legionnaire and lancer in Polish cavalry. During his active life, he was a devoted social activist, sportsman and teacher. Biography Zaruski was born on 18 January 1867 in Dumanowo near the Kamieniec Podolski in Poland. During his youth at Odessa University, where he studied mathematics and physics, he was attracted to maritime activities. He worked as a seaman on various ships. He visited distant regions including Siberia, China, Japan, India, Egypt and Syria. For his participation in a Polish patriotic anti-Russian organization, the Russian government exiled him to Arkhangelsk in 1894.
