Derek Fox (Canadian Politician)
Gordon Derek Fox (born December 27, 1950) is an insurance agent and former provincial level politician from Alberta, Canada. He served as a member of the Legislative Assembly of Alberta from 1986 to 1993. Political career Fox ran for a seat in the Alberta Legislature in the 1986 Alberta general election as a candidate for the New Democrats. He won the electoral district of Vegreville defeating Progressive Conservative candidate Ron Rudkowsky and two other candidates in a hotly contested race. He ran for a second term in office in the 1989 Alberta general election winning an increased plurality defeating two other candidates. Vegreville was abolished in the boundary redistribution of 1993. Fox ran for re-election in the new electoral district of Vegreville-Viking. He was defeated running in the general election held that year, losing his seat to Progressive Conservative candidate Ed Stelmach. Legislative Assembly Of Alberta
The Legislative Assembly of Alberta is the deliberative assembly of the province of Alberta, Canada. It sits in the Alberta Legislature Building in Edmonton. The Legislative Assembly currently has 87 members, elected first past the post from single-member electoral districts. Bills passed by the Legislative Assembly are given royal assent by the Lieutenant Governor of Alberta, as the viceregal representative of the King of Canada. The Legislative Assembly and the Lieutenant Governor together make up the unicameral Alberta Legislature. Vegreville (provincial Electoral District)
Vegreville was a provincial electoral district in Alberta, Canada, mandated to return a single member to the Legislative Assembly of Alberta from 1909 to 1963 and again from 1971 to 1993. History Boundary history Vegreville was created from the northwest corner of the Vermilion district as part of the almost-doubling of seats in the Legislature in 1909. Over time, its boundaries were adjusted several times, shrinking to the area immediately surrounding the town of Vegreville. In 1963, Vegreville was merged with some of the Bruce district to form Vegreville-Bruce, but in the redistribution that followed, the district was renamed Vegreville with little change in boundaries. John Batiuk
John S. Batiuk (March 20, 1923 – August 1, 2005) was a municipal and provincial level politician from Alberta, Canada. He served as a member of the Legislative Assembly of Alberta from 1971 to 1986. Batiuk sat with the governing Progressive Conservative caucus. Political career Batiuk began his political career in 1968 when he ran for a seat on the newly created Municipal District of Lamont No, 82. He represented Division 1 until 1974. Batiuk moved to provincial politics running for a seat to the Alberta Legislature for the first time in the 1971 Alberta general election. He defeated incumbent Alex Gordey to win the redistributed electoral district of Vegreville and pick it up for the Progressive Conservatives who had formed government for the first time in that election. 1989 Alberta General Election
The 1989 Alberta general election was held on March 20, 1989, to elect members of the Legislative Assembly of Alberta. Many political observers were surprised by the early election call as less than three years had passed since the previous election. Premier Don Getty, in his second election as Progressive Conservative Party leader, led it to its sixth consecutive term in government, although supported by less than half the votes cast in the election. Despite losing a significant share of the popular vote, the PC's benefited from a split vote between the two main opponents Liberals and NDP. Together those two parties received 55 percent of the vote to the Conservative's 44 percent. The Conservatives sustained a net loss of only two seats in the legislature. The 1993 Alberta general election was held on June 15, 1993, to elect members of the Legislative Assembly of Alberta. The Conservative government was re-elected, taking 51 seats out of 83 (61 percent of the seats) but only having support of 45 percent of voters. Edward Michael Stelmach (; born May 11, 1951) is a Canadian politician and served as the 13th premier of Alberta, from 2006 to 2011. The grandson of Ukrainian immigrants, Stelmach was born and raised on a farm near Lamont and fluently speaks the distinctive Canadian dialect of Ukrainian.
