The Department of Social Development (DSD) of South Africa is a South African Government, government department responsible for providing social development, protection, and welfare services to the public. Previously called the Department of Welfare, it was renamed in July 2000. The current Minister of Social Development (South Africa), Minister of Social Development is Lindiwe Zulu. The first Department was established in 1937, to regulate and subsidise existing private, non-governmental welfare services, while providing some additional services. The 1997 White Paper for Social Welfare noted that post-Apartheid South Africa had inherited social welfare programmes which were “not considered to be critical social investment priorities and were under-resourced”. Hendrietta Bogopane-Zulu
Hendrietta Ipeleng Bogopane-Zulu (born 11 March 1971) is a South African politician and activist who is currently serving as Minister of Social Development (South Africa), Deputy Minister of Social Development since 26 May 2014. She represented the African National Congress (ANC) in the National Assembly of South Africa, National Assembly from 1999 South African general election, 1999 to 2019 South African general election, 2019. Bogopane-Zulu was born Blindness, blind and is a disability activist. Lindiwe Zulu
Lindiwe Daphney Zulu (born 21 April 1958) is South Africa's Minister of Social Development. She was the special advisor to the President on International Relations. She previously served as the head of communication for the PAN African women's organisation in Angola in 1988. In 1989 she moved to Lusaka, Zambia where she held the position of head of communication in the ANC department of Religious Affairs. In 1990 she moved to Uganda where she was the head of communication and administrator in the ANC office. In 1991 she returned to South Africa and became the head of communication in the ANC Women's League.
