The Department of Repatriation and Compensation was an Australian government department that existed between June 1974 and December 1975. History The department was created by the Whitlam government in 1974, expanding on the narrower Repatriation Department, with the intention that the new department would perform a wider total function of compensation to deserving groups in the community. The new compensation function included Commonwealth employees compensation, seamen's compensation, natural disasters, air accidents, the Housing Loans Insurance Corporation and Defence Service Homes Loans Insurance and the proposed Australian Government Insurance Office. The Department of Veterans' Affairs is a department of the Government of Australia, established in 1976, and charged with the responsibility of delivering government programs for war veterans, members of the Australian Defence Force, members of the Australian Federal Police, and their dependants. John Wheeldon
John Murray Wheeldon (9 August 192924 May 2006) was an Australian politician and journalist. He was a member of the Australian Labor Party (ALP) and a senator for Western Australia from 1965 to 1981. He held ministerial office in the Whitlam government as Minister for Repatriation and Compensation (1974–1975) and Minister for Social Security (1975). He was known for his views on Australian foreign policy and after leaving politics became an editorial writer for ''The Australian''. Don Chipp
Donald Leslie Chipp, AO (21 August 192528 August 2006) was an Australian politician who was the inaugural leader of the Australian Democrats, leading the party from 1977 to 1986. He began his career as a member of the Liberal Party, winning election to the House of Representatives in 1960 and serving as a government minister for a cumulative total of six years. Chipp left the Liberals in 1977 and was soon persuaded to lead a new party, the Democrats who, he famously proclaimed in 1980, would "keep the bastards honest". He was elected to the Senate on 10 December 1977 and led the party at four federal elections. From 1983 it held the sole balance of power in the Senate. Richard Kingsland
Sir Richard Kingsland, (19 October 1916 – 27 August 2012) was an Australian RAAF pilot known for being the youngest Australian group captain at age 29. He later became a senior public servant, heading the Departments of the Interior, Repatriation, and Veterans' Affairs. Biography Julius Allan Cohen was born in 1916. He later changed his name to Richard Kingsland, to avoid anti-semitism. Kingsland was sent to Morocco in 1940 to rescue two of Britain's most senior WWII leaders, Duff Cooper and John Vereker, 6th Viscount Gort. Kingsland managed to rescue them from French headquarters with only two other men and managed to flee in a Seaplane. That same year, he and his crew were sent to bomb a major Japanese headquarters established in Rabaul, New Guinea.
