The Department of National Development was an Australian government department that existed between March 1950 and December 1972, and briefly between December 1977 and December 1979. History The Department of National Development was established in March 1950, with Richard Casey, Baron Casey as its Minister. Media reported that the new Department would plan for the supply of basic commodities, promote decentralisation and regional development and plan for the development of primary and manufacturing industries and the stimulation of housing construction. Rex Patterson
Rex Alan Patterson (8 January 1927 – 13 April 2016) was an Australian politician. He was a member of the Australian Labor Party (ALP) and held ministerial office in the Whitlam Government as Minister for Northern Development (1972–1975), the Northern Territory (1973–1975), Northern Australia (1975), and Agriculture (1975). Early life, war service and education Patterson was born in Bundaberg, Queensland on 8 January 1927. He enlisted for war service on 22 February 1945 in Brisbane, Queensland, during the final months of World War II. Ray Stanley Livingston (29 August 1922 – 31 October 2006) was a senior Australian public servant. He was Secretary of the Department of Northern Development from 1972 to 1975, and from 1975 to 1978 Secretary of the Department of the Northern Territory. Life and career Livingston was born in Nyah, Victoria in August 1922. He enlisted in the Royal Australian Air Force in February 1941 during World War II serving as a pilot in Coastal Command in Europe. Livingston worked with the Departments of National Development from 1950 to 1956 and Trade and Industry from 1956 to 1972. Between 1959 and 1961 he was Commercial Counsellor in Washington DC. On 20 December 1972, Livingston was appointed Secretary of the new Department of Northern Development.
