The Department of Architecture is part of the Faculty of Architecture and History of Art in the University of Cambridge. Both Departments are housed in Scroope Terrace on Trumpington Street, Cambridge. The department is currently led by James Campbell. Edward Cullinan
Edward Horder Cullinan HonFRIAS (17 July 1931 – 11 November 2019) was an English architect. Life Born in central London to Joy, an artist mother, and Edward, a doctor, Cullinan was educated at Ampleforth College, Queens' College, Cambridge, the Architectural Association, and the University of California, Berkeley before working for Denys Lasdun where he designed the student residences for the University of East Anglia. Cullinan founded his own practice in 1959. The employee-owned business, Cullinan Studio (formerly Edward Cullinan Architects), was founded in 1965. James Mason
James Neville Mason (; 15 May 190927 July 1984) was an English actor. He achieved considerable success in British cinema before becoming a star in Hollywood. He was the top box-office attraction in the UK in 1944 and 1945; his British films included ''The Seventh Veil'' (1945) and ''The Wicked Lady'' (1945). Lionel March
Lionel John March (26 January 1934 20 February 2018) was a British mathematician, architect and digital artist, perhaps best known for his early pioneering of computer-aided architecture and art. Early life and education March was born in Hove, England on 26 January 1934. As a teenager, his interests included mathematics, theatre and design. At the age of 17 he wrote an original mathematical paper generalizing the theory of complex numbers to n-dimensions, for which the computer pioneer Alan Turing wrote "you have done this research with imagination and competence". For this, March was awarded a state scholarship to read mathematics at Magdalene College, Cambridge in 1954, with a personal recommendation from Alan Turing, where he earned a B.A. and Doctor of Science. Lynch Architects
Lynch Architects, formed in 1998 by Patrick Lynch, is a London-based practice. The directors are Patrick Lynch, Claudia Lynch and David Evans. Lynch Architects was awarded the Young Architect of the Year Award from Building Design magazine in 2005, and co-represented Ireland at the 2008 Venice Architecture Biennale. The practice was selected by Sir David Chipperfield to exhibit at the 2012 Biennale. The practice's early reputation was established through exhibitions and writing as much as its built work. Robert Hurd
Robert Philip Andrew Hurd (29 July 1905 – 17 September 1963) was an influential conservation architect. His original aim was to be an architectural author specialising in traditional forms. He came to Scotland in 1930 and worked at the Edinburgh College of Art for two years as assistant to the architect and planner Frank Mears. He was an early and highly respected conservation architect and wrote and broadcast on Scottish architecture, planning and reconstruction. Life Hurd was of Anglo-Scottish parentage, the son of Sir Percy Angler Hurd MP and Hannah Swan Cox. He suffered from polio in early life and walked his whole life with a limp. Vaughan Hart
Vaughan Hart is an architectural historian, and Professor Emeritus of Architecture in the Department of Architecture and Civil Engineering at the University of Bath. He served as head of department between 2008 and 2010. Biography Hart was born in Ireland in 1960 and spent part of his childhood in Hong Kong. He studied architecture at Bath and Cambridge Universities (Trinity Hall), where he was taught by Michael Brawne, Patrick Hodgkinson, Peter Smithson, Ted Happold and Dalibor Vesely. Smithson was his final year undergraduate tutor, and part of Hart's student project was exhibited in the 1986 Royal Academy Summer Exhibition where it won the Royal Academy Student Prize. Prince Richard, Duke of Gloucester, (Richard Alexander Walter George; born 26 August 1944) is a member of the British royal family. Philip Dowson
Sir Philip Henry Manning Dowson (16 August 1924 – 22 August 2014) was a leading British architect. He served as President of the Royal Academy from 1993 to 1999. Early life Philip Dowson was born in South Africa. Having moved to England, he was educated at Gresham's School in Holt, Norfolk, from 1938 to 1942 and then went up to University College, Oxford (where he later designed four student accommodation blocks for Stavertonia in North Oxford), to read Mathematics. This was during the Second World War. After one year in Oxford, he joined the Royal Navy and remained in the service until 1947. On leaving the Navy, Dowson proceeded to Clare College, Cambridge, to study Art from 1947 to 1950, and then to the Architectural Association School in London.
