Aileen Dent
Aileen Rose Dent (1890 – 30 March 1978) was an Australian artist known for her portraits, specifically her portrait of Australian aviator Jean Burns. Biography Dent was born in 1890 in Deniliquin, New South Wales. From 1909 to 1916 she was a student at the National Gallery Art School in Melbourne. Dent exhibited regularly at the Atheneum Gallery and was a finalist in the Archibald Prize many times. Her paintings were included in the exhibit ''Australian Women Artists, One Hundred Years 1840 - 1940''. The National Gallery of Australia owns Dent's portrait of Dame Elizabeth Couchman. Clinton Thomas Dent
Clinton Thomas Dent FRCS (7 December 1850 – 26 August 1912) was an English surgeon, author and mountaineer. Early life The fourth surviving son of Thomas Dent, he was educated at Eton College and Trinity College, Cambridge. Alpinism Alongside Albert Mummery, Dent was one of the most prominent of the British climbers who attempted the few remaining unclimbed mountains in the Alps in the period known as the silver age of alpinism. George Dent
George Dent (1756 – December 2, 1813) was an American planter and politician from Maryland who served in the House of Representatives from 1793 to 1801. Early life Dent was born on his father's estate, "Windsor Castle", on the Mattawoman Creek in Charles County. His father, General John Dent (1733-1809), was a planter who was a patriot during the Revolutionary War. Revolutionary War He initially served during the Revolutionary War in 1776 as a 1st lieutenant in the Third Battalion of the Flying Camp from Maryland. After the Flying Camp was disbanded in December 1776, Dent returned to Maryland and was commissioned a 1st lieutenant in the Charles County militia under Captain Thomas H. Marshall. Frederick Tracy Dent
Frederick Tracy Dent (December 17, 1820 – December 23, 1892) was an American general. Early life Dent was born on December 17, 1820 in White Haven, St. Louis County, Missouri. He was the son of Frederick Fayette Dent (1787–1873) and Ellen Bray (née Wrenshall) Dent (1793–1857). He graduated from West Point in 1843. One of Dent's classmates was Ulysses S. Grant, who married Dent's sister Julia. The children of Ulysses and Julia Grant included Dent's namesake, Frederick Dent Grant. Career Dent was assigned as brevet second lieutenant to the 6th US Infantry, served in the Southern campaign during the Mexican–American War, and was brevetted first lieutenant and captain for gallant and meritorious conduct at Contreras, Churubusco and at Molino del Rey respectively. Sir Francis Henry Dent, CVO (31 December 1866 – 4 June 1955) was a British railway manager. He was the son of Admiral C.B.C. Dent. He was General Manager of the SE&CR 1911–1920. Emma Dent (née Brocklehurst; 5 March 1823 – 22 February 1900) was an English antiquarian and collector who restored and developed Sudeley Castle in Gloucestershire. Dent corresponded with some of the most famous names and eminent thinkers of the 19th century. She planned the layout of the gardens at Sudeley and oversaw their creation. She was an authority on the locality, publishing a lengthy account and documenting antiquities. She also acquired many fine antiques, and amassed a large collection of autographs, as well as a world-class collection of lace and needlework. Edward Joseph Dent (16 July 1876 – 22 August 1957), generally known as Edward J. Dent, was an English musicologist, teacher, translator and critic. A leading figure of musicology and music criticism, Dent was Professor of Music at the University of Cambridge between 1926 and 1941. Edward John Dent (1790–1853) was a famous English watchmaker noted for his highly accurate clocks and marine chronometers. He founded the Dent company. Early years Edward John Dent, son of John and Elizabeth Dent, was born in London on 19 August 1790. He was baptised on 18 October 1790, at St. Clement Danes Church in the Strand. Edith Vere Dent
Edith Vere Dent née Annesley (1863–1948) was an amateur botanist and wild flower enthusiast who is remembered as founder of the UK Wild Flower Society (UK), Wild Flower Society. She was also an organiser for the Red Cross and her work in the First World War was recognised with an OBE. Family life Dent was the daughter of the Rev. Francis Hanbury and Maria Charlotte Annesley. Born on 25 September 1863 in Limpsfield Surrey, she and the family moved to Clifford Chambers near Stratford-upon-Avon in the 1870s when her father became rector there. After leaving school she had responsibility for her youngest sister's education, and she also kept a diary where she recorded her observations of wild flowers.
