Athletics At The 1984 Summer Olympics – Men's Marathon
The men's marathon at the 1984 Summer Olympics in Los Angeles, California, was held on Sunday August 12, 1984. The race started at 5:00 pm local time. There were 107 competitors from 59 countries. The maximum number of athletes per nation had been set at 3 since the 1930 Olympic Congress. A total number of 78 athletes completed the race. The race was won by Carlos Lopes of Portugal, giving Portugal its first ever Olympics gold medal, and Portugal's first medal in the men's marathon. His time of 2:09:21 was the Olympic record for the next 24 years. Ireland also won its first men's marathon medal, with John Treacy's silver. Great Britain returned to the podium for the first time since 1964 with Charlie Spedding taking bronze. John Carlsen (born 31 December 1961) is a Danish former racing cyclist. He rode in six Grand Tours between 1988 and 1991. The qualification and quarter finals were on 2 August and the semi-finals and finals on 3 August. The Italian team recorded a dominant victory by winning by 4:10 over Switzerland. The Italian team was one of the first teams to use modern carbon-fiber disc wheels, which are now commonly used in time trials. Their time of 1h 58:28 was the fastest time ever recorded over 100 km in a team time trial, and would have been faster without a flat tire that cost them 20 seconds to change the wheel. The men's individual road race at the 1984 Summer Olympics in Los Angeles, California, was held on Sunday July 29, 1984. There were 135 participants from 43 nations in the race over 190.20 km, on a course in Mission Viejo, California. The maximum number of cyclists per nation was four. 55 cyclists finished. The event was won by Alexi Grewal of the United States, the nation's first medal in the men's individual road race. All three nations represented on the podium were there for the first time in the event; Canada with Steve Bauer's silver and Norway with Dag Otto Lauritzen's bronze joined the Americans.
