Deniliquin Public School And School Master's Residence
Deniliquin Public School and School Masters Residence is a heritage-listed former school and now museum, arts centre and visitor information centre at George Street, Deniliquin, Edward River Council, New South Wales, Australia. It is also known as the Peppin Heritage Centre. The property is owned by the Edward River Council. It was added to the New South Wales State Heritage Register on 2 April 1999. History In 1857 a school site was chosen close to the Edward River and in 1861 a brick schoolhouse was erected with a frontage to George Street. A survey revealed that only 138 children out of the 613 living in the area attended school. In 1879 a new school building was built on the site and for one year the old 1861 school became the schoolmaster's residence. As the building was in bad repair, the school principal, David Kennedy refused to live there and in 1880 the old building was demolished a new schoolmaster's residence was constructed in Gothic Revival style. Deniliquin () is a town in the Riverina region of New South Wales, Australia, close to the border with Victoria. It is the largest town in the Edward River Council local government area. Deniliquin is located at the intersection of the Riverina and Cobb Highway approximately south west of the state capital, Sydney and due north of Melbourne. The town is divided in two parts by the Edward River, an anabranch of the Murray River, with the main business district located on the south bank. Edward River Council
The Edward River Council is a local government area in the Riverina region of New South Wales, Australia. This area was formed in 2016 from the merger of the Deniliquin Council with the surrounding Conargo Shire. The combined area covers the urban area of Deniliquin and the surrounding region to the north and west across the pastoral southern Riverina plains. The inaugural Mayor of the Edward River Council is Norm Brennan, elected by the Councillors on 20 September 2017. Main towns and villages In addition to the main centre of Deniliquin, localities in the area include Blighty, Booroorban, Conargo, Mayrung, Morago, Pretty Pine and Wanganella.
