Denbighshire (UK Parliament Constituency)
Denbighshire was a county constituency in Denbighshire, in north Wales, from 1542 to 1885. History From 1542, it returned one Member of Parliament (MP), traditionally known as the knight of the shire, to the House of Commons of the Parliament of England until 1707, then to the Parliament of Great Britain until 1800, and to the Parliament of the United Kingdom from 1801. These MPs were elected by the first past the post voting system. Under the Reform Act 1832, the constituency's representation was increased to two members, elected by the bloc vote system. The constituency was abolished by the Redistribution of Seats Act 1885 for the 1885 general election, when Denbighshire was split into two single-member constituencies: the Eastern and Western divisions, each returning one Member of Parliament. East Denbighshire, formally called the Eastern Division of Denbighshire, was a county constituency in Denbighshire, in Wales. It returned one Member of Parliament (MP) to the House of Commons of the Parliament of the United Kingdom, elected by the first past the post voting system. 1885 United Kingdom General Election
The 1885 United Kingdom general election was held from 24 November to 18 December 1885. This was the first general election after an Representation of the People Act 1884, extension of the franchise and Redistribution of Seats Act 1885, redistribution of seats. For the first time a majority of adult males could vote and most constituencies by law returned a single member to Parliament, fulfilling one of the ideals of Chartism to provide direct single-member, single-electorate accountability. It saw the Liberals, led by William Ewart Gladstone, William Gladstone, win the most seats, but not an overall majority. Peter Mutton
Sir Peter Mutton (1565 – 4 November 1637) was a Welsh lawyer and politician who sat in the House of Commons at various times between 1604 and 1624. Mutton was the son of John Mytton, a landowner in the Vale of Clwyd. He matriculated at St Alban Hall, Oxford, on 18 October 1583, at the age of 18. He was called to the bar at Lincoln's Inn in 1594. In 1604, he was elected Member of Parliament for Denbighshire. He was granted the reversion of the office of Attorney General in Wales and Shropshire, Herefordshire, Gloucestershire, Worcestershire, Cheshire, and Flintshire for life on 26 March 1607, but resigned the position on 3 December 1614. He was appointed Attorney in the Marches and one of the council, and granted leave to practise on 23 December 1609. He was appointed Prothonotary and Clerk of the Crown in North Wales. John Salusbury (poet)
Sir John Salusbury (1567 – 24 July 1612) was a Welsh knight, politician and poet of the Elizabethan era. He is notable for his opposition to the faction of Robert Devereux, 2nd Earl of Essex, and for his patronage of complex acrostic and allegorical poetry that anticipated the Metaphysical movement. Life Salusbury was a member of the Salusbury family of Lleweni in the Vale of Clwyd, Denbighshire, where they owned a considerable estate, including Lleweni Hall. Various members of the family acquired honours and appointments through their support of the Tudor monarchs. He was the son of Sir John Salusbury and Katheryn of Berain, and the younger brother of Thomas Salusbury, who was executed in 1586 for his involvement in the Babington Plot against Elizabeth I. Roger Puleston
Sir Roger Puleston (1565 – 13 December 1618) was a Welsh politician who sat in the House of Commons at various times between 1584 and 1611. Puleston was the son of Sir Roger Puleston of Emral. He matriculated at Brasenose College, Oxford, on 27 April 1582. In 1584, he was elected Member of Parliament for Great Bedwyn. He entered the Inner Temple in November 1585. In 1586, he was reelected MP for Great Bedwyn. He was elected MP for Flintshire in 1588 and MP for Denbighshire Denbighshire ( ; cy, Sir Ddinbych; ) is a county in the north-east of Wales. Its borders differ from the historic county of the same name. This part of Wales contains the country's oldest known evidence of habitation – Pontnewydd (Bontnewy ... in 1593. Evan Lloyd (MP)
Evan Lloyd (died 1587), of Bodidris, Llanarmon yn Iâl, Denbighshire, was a Welsh politician. He was the eldest son of John Lloyd. He was a Justice of the Peace for Denbighshire from 1575, for Flintshire from 1579 and for Merioneth from 1583. He was appointed High Sheriff of Denbighshire for 1582-83 and custos rotulorum of Denbighshire from 1575. He was elected a Member (MP) of the Parliament of England for Denbighshire Denbighshire ( ; cy, Sir Ddinbych; ) is a county in the north-east of Wales. Its borders differ from the historic county of the same name. This part of Wales contains the country's oldest known evidence of habitation – Pontnewydd (Bontnewy ... in 1584. William Almer ( fl. 1572) of Pant Iocyn, Denbighshire, was a Welsh politician. Almer was the eldest son of the MP, Edward Almer of Gresford, Denbighshire. He succeeded his father after 1574, inheriting Pant Iocyn (Pant-yr-Ochain) house at Almer, between Gresford and Wrexham.. Edward Almer
Edward Almer or Aylmer (by 1516 – 1574 or later), of Denbigh and Gresford, Denbighshire, was a Welsh politician. He was a younger son of John Almer of Almer, Denbighshire, a sergeant-at-arms at the court of Henry VIII. He was a Justice of the Peace for Denbighshire from 1543 to his death and was appointed High Sheriff of Denbighshire for 1552–53, 1557–58 and 1570–71. He was elected a Member (MP) of the Parliament of England for Denbighshire in 1555. He transferred the family seat from Almer to Pant Iocyn (now Pant-yr-Ochain), a house he rebuilt between Gresford and Wrexham using materials salvaged from his previous home. He married Dorothy, the daughter of Sir George Calverley of Lea, Cheshire and widow of Robert Bostock of Churton, Cheshire. They had 5 sons and 3 daughters.
