The Democratic Union for the Republic ( it, Unione Democratica per la Repubblica, UDR) was a short-lived Christian-democratic and centrist political party in Italy. It was founded in February 1998 by Francesco Cossiga (former Prime Minister and President) in order to provide a majority in Parliament for the creation of the D'Alema I Cabinet. The Christian Democratic Centre ( it, Centro Cristiano Democratico, CCD) was a Christian-democratic political party in Italy from 1994 to 2002. Formed from a right-wing split from Christian Democracy, the party joined the centre-right coalition, and was a member of the European People's Party (EPP). History The CCD was founded in January 1994 by members of Christian Democracy (DC) who opposed the party's transformation into the Italian People's Party (PPI), and advocated an alliance with Silvio Berlusconi's Forza Italia (FI), which was launched on the same day, while the PPI advocated a centrist alliance with the Segni Pact called Pact for Italy. Carlo Scognamiglio Pasini (born 27 November 1944) is an Italian economist and politician. He is a university professor in applied economics, and was Chancellor of the Libera Università Internazionale degli Studi Sociali Guido Carli, LUISS University of Rome (1984–1992). He was President of the Italian Senate from 1994 to 1996 and Italian Minister of Defense, Minister of Defence from 1998 to 2000. The Pact of Liberal Democrats (''Patto dei Liberaldemocratici''), also called Segni-Scognamiglio Pact (''Patto Segni-Scognamiglio''), was a liberal and Christian-democratic Italian political party. It was conceived in 2003 by Mario Segni, Carlo Scognamiglio Pasini (ex- PLI, ex- PL, ex- FI, ex- UDR, ex- UpR, ex- FdL and ex- DE) and Michele Cossa (leader of the Sardinian Reformers), as a centrist party alternative to the centre-left. European Democracy ( it, Democrazia Europea, DE) was a minor Christian-democratic, centrist political party in Italy. The Federation of Liberals ( it, Federazione dei Liberali, FdL) was a minor liberal political party in Italy. The party was founded on 6 February 1994 as the legal successor of the Italian Liberal Party (PLI): Alfredo Biondi, incumbent president of the PLI, was elected president and Raffaello Morelli coordinator. The Communist Refoundation Party ( it, Partito della Rifondazione Comunista, PRC) is a communist political party in Italy that emerged from a split of the Italian Communist Party (PCI) in 1991. The party's secretary is Maurizio Acerbo, who replaced Paolo Ferrero in 2017. Armando Cossutta was the party's founder, while Fausto Bertinotti its longest-serving leader (1994–2008).
