Missing Personnel Office
The Defense Prisoner of War/Missing Personnel Office (DPMO), as part of the United States Department of Defense, was an organization that reported to the Under Secretary of Defense for Policy through the Assistant Secretary of Defense (International Security Affairs). DPMO provided centralized management of prisoner of war/ missing personnel (POW/MP) affairs within the Department of Defense. On January 30, 2015, DPMO, along with the Joint POW/MIA Accounting Command, were merged into the new Defense POW/MIA Accounting Agency. DPMO thus ceased to be as a separate entity. Vietnam War POW/MIA Issue
The Vietnam War POW/MIA issue concerns the fate of United States servicemen who were reported as missing in action (MIA) during the Vietnam War and associated theaters of operation in Southeast Asia. The term also refers to issues related to the treatment of affected family members by the governments involved in these conflicts. Following the Paris Peace Accords of 1973, 591 U.S. prisoners of war (POWs) were returned during Operation Homecoming. The United States listed about 2,500 Americans as prisoners of war or missing in action but only 1,200 Americans were reported to have been killed in action with no body recovered. Many of these were airmen who were shot down over North Vietnam or Laos. Investigations of these incidents have involved determining whether the men involved survived being shot down. Operation Glory
Operation Glory was an American effort to repatriate the remains of United Nations Command casualties from North Korea at the end of the Korean War. The Korean Armistice Agreement of July 1953 called for the repatriation of all casualties and prisoners of war, and through September and October 1954 the Graves Registration Service Command received the remains of approximately 4,000 casualties. Note: the calculation of remains comes from Coleman as the "Historical Summary" gives a total of 4,023 UN remains received. Of the 1,868 American remains, 848 unidentified remains were buried as " unknowns" at the National Memorial Cemetery of the Pacific in Hawaii. Some of the remains came from the temporary military cemeteries in North Korea that had been abandoned as Chinese forces pushed US forces out of North Korea. Recovery Of US Human Remains From The Korean War
The recovery of US human remains from the Korean War has continued since the end of the war. ; Death Valley Camp More than 36,000 American troops died during the Korean War (1950–1953). As of 2019, the Defense POW/MIA Accounting Agency describes more than 7,800 Americans as "unaccounted for" from the Korean War. The United States Armed Forces estimates that 5,300 of these troops went missing in North Korea. Operation Glory After the Korean Armistice, North Korea returned the remains of more than 3,000 Americans in what was termed Operation Glory in 1954. At the same time, US Graves Registration teams recovered remains from South Korea. The US identified thousands of these remains. In 1956, 848 sets of remains that could not be identified were buried in the National Memorial Cemetery of the Pacific, known as the Punchbowl Cemetery, in Honolulu, Hawaii.
