Deep Roots (novel)
''Deep Roots'' is a 2018 alternate history, fantasy and horror novel by American science fiction and fantasy writer Ruthanna Emrys. It is the third book in Emrys' three book ''Innsmouth Legacy'' series, after ''The Litany of Earth'' (2014) and '' Winter Tide'' (2017). The series is set in the Cthulhu Mythos universe created by H. P. Lovecraft, and builds on Lovecraft's 1936 novella, " The Shadow over Innsmouth". ''Deep Roots'' was nominated for the 2019 Locus Award for Best Fantasy Novel, the 2019 Dragon Award for Best Fantasy Novel, and the 2019 Mythopoeic Award in Adult Literature. Plot summary After the events in '' Winter Tide'', siblings Aphra and Caleb Marsh decide to return to their people's fictional hometown of Innsmouth in New England, and rebuild it before property developers move in. Ruthanna Emrys
Ruthanna Emrys is an American science fiction and fantasy writer best known for The Innsmouth Legacy series: '' The Litany of Earth'', '' Winter Tide'', and '' Deep Roots''. Biography Emrys is a contributor to science fiction and fantasy magazines, including ''Strange Horizons'', ''Analog'', and Tor.com. She has also written under the name R. Emrys Gordon. She has cited Geraldine Brooks, Octavia E. Butler, Marge Piercy, and Robert Anton Wilson as influences on her writing. She is best known for The Innsmouth Legacy series, which has ''Winter Tide'' as its first novel. In ''The Verge'', Andrew Liptak discusses ''Winter Tide'', writing "Along with a previous novelette called ''The Litany of Earth'', it subverts Lovecraft's notorious racism by making his monsters - which were often thinly veiled stand-ins for people of color - sympathetic protagonists." Deep One
The Deep Ones are creatures in the Cthulhu Mythos of H. P. Lovecraft. The beings first appeared in Lovecraft's novella ''The Shadow over Innsmouth'' (1931), but were already hinted at in the early short story "Dagon". The Deep Ones are a race of intelligent ocean-dwelling creatures, approximately human-shaped but with a fishy appearance. The females would regularly mate with voluntary human males along the coast, creating societies of hybrids. Numerous Mythos elements are associated with the Deep Ones, including the legendary town of Innsmouth, the undersea city of Y'ha-nthlei, the Esoteric Order of Dagon, and the beings known as Father Dagon and Mother Hydra. After their debut in Lovecraft's tale, the sea-dwelling creatures resurfaced in the works of other authors, especially August Derleth. The Los Angeles Public Library system (LAPL) is a public library system in Los Angeles, California.
