Dease Strait
Dease Strait is an east–west waterway between the mainland's Kent Peninsula and Victoria Island (Canada), Victoria Island in Nunavut, Canada. It is part of the Northwest Passage. At its eastern end, approximately wide, is Cambridge Bay; to the west it widens to approximately and becomes Coronation Gulf. The strait is long. The Strait is named after the Canadian explorer Peter Warren Dease, who was the first to navigate it along with the Scottish explorer Thomas Simpson (explorer), Thomas Simpson. John Dease
Conly John Paget Dease (26 May 1906 – 1 February 1979) was a prominent Australian radio presenter and quiz show host at 2GB, Sydney, and through it, the Macquarie Radio Network from 1935 until at least 1969. He was born in Bhamo, Upper Burma, son of a lieutenant in the 91st Punjabi Regiment. He completed his schooling after the family's return to Somerset. Rather than follow his father into the army, he migrated in 1923 to South Australia as one of the Barwell Boys. He was first indentured as a farm labourer to E. H. Mattner of Clare, South Australia but failed to impress however, and likewise failed in a 1925 apprenticeship to printer Hunter Brothers of Leabrook. In 1928 he began teaching at Scotch College, Adelaide followed by a stint at Tudor House, Moss Vale, New South Wales then from 1930 to 1933 at Scots College, Sydney. Thomas Dease
Thomas Dease was at one time Roman Catholic Bishop of Meath. He was born in Ireland in 1568 and died in Galway in 1651. He sprang from an ancient Irish family at one time possessing considerable landed property in County Cavan and County Westmeath. In youth, he acquired some proficiency in the Irish language, in which language he wrote some poems. Having determined to become a priest, he proceeded to Paris, where after ordination he spent the first years of his priesthood. During this time he became rector of the Irish College in Paris. Dease returned to Ireland in 1621, having been appointed Bishop of Meath. Thomas Messingham succeeded him as rector. He was consecrated the following year. In spite of persecution and penal laws, he continued loyal to England and preached loyalty to his flock. Teresa Ellen Dease (4 May 1820 – 1 July 1889) was a Roman Catholic nun and the foundress of the Loreto Sisters (Institute of the Blessed Virgin Mary in Canada and in North America. She arrived in Toronto in 1847 at the invitation of Bishop Michael Power. Life Ellen Dease was born in Naas, County Kildare, Ireland, the youngest of five children born to Oliver and Anne Nugent Dease. Her father was a surgeon at Westmoreland Lock Hospital. Orphaned at a young age, she was raised by her maternal grandmother in Dublin, where she attended a school for young ladies. She continued her education in Paris, where she became fluent in French and Italian, and an accomplished musician. Returning to Dublin, she took part in the social life of the city. Peter Warren Dease (1 January 1788 – 17 January 1863) was a Canadian fur trader and Arctic explorer. Biography Early life Peter Warren Dease was born at Fort Mackinac on 1 January 1788, the fourth son of Dr. John Dease, an Irish loyalist and the captain and a deputy agent in the British Indian Department, and Jane French, who may have been a Mohawk from Caughnawaga. His father was a nephew of Sir William Johnson, and first cousin of Sir John Johnson. He was named after Admiral Sir Peter Warren, an uncle of Sir William Johnson. He was raised by his family in Mackinac Island and then Montreal, until he left home at the age of 13 to work in the fur trade. Fur trade Dease first worked for the XY Company at Great Slave Lake. Michael Patrick Dease (born August 25, 1982) is an American jazz tenor and bass trombonist, composer and producer. He also plays saxophone, trumpet, flugelhorn, Double bass, bass and piano. Biography Michael Dease was born in Augusta, Georgia and attended John S. Davidson Fine Arts Magnet High School, where he studied saxophone and voice. During his time as a high school student he achieved all-state honors on the latter instrument for three years in a row. At age 17, Michael taught himself to play trombone, and was soon invited to join the inaugural class of the Juilliard jazz studies program by Wycliffe Gordon. Maurice Dease
Maurice James Dease VC (28 September 1889 – 23 August 1914) was an Irish recipient of the Victoria Cross, the highest and most prestigious award for gallantry in the face of the enemy that can be awarded to British and Commonwealth forces. He was one of the first British officer battle casualties of the war and the first officer to posthumously receive the Victoria Cross. Military career Dease was born on 28 September 1889 in Gaulstown, Coole, County Westmeath, Ireland to Edmund Fitzlaurence Dease and Katherine Dease (née Murray). He was educated at Stonyhurst College and the Army Department of Wimbledon College before attending the Royal Military College, Sandhurst. Dease Lake (British Columbia)
Dease Lake is a lake in the Stikine Plateau of the Northern Interior of British Columbia, Canada, located at the head of the Dease River, which flows north then northeast from the lake to join the Liard River. The community of Dease Lake, British Columbia, formerly Dease Lake Post, is located at the south end of the lake, straddling a low pass which leads into the basin from the Tanzilla River, a tributary of the Stikine. The area around the lake was the focus of the Cassiar Gold Rush and numerous ghost towns and former settlement sites are scattered around its shores, including Laketon and Centre City. Dease Lake is the burial site and has a monument to English travelogue writer Warburton Pike. The Rev. Dennis Dease is a Roman Catholic priest, who served as the 14th president of the University of St. Thomas in Minnesota from his election in 1991 to 2013.
