Deane is an area of Bolton, in Greater Manchester, England. It is about south west of Bolton and northwest of the city of Manchester. Historically a part of Lancashire, the parish of Deane was one of eleven parishes within the hundred of Salford and covered roughly half of the present Metropolitan Borough of Bolton. The Church of St Mary on which the parish was centred was in the township of Rumworth. The continental Navy frigate USS ''Deane'' was originally a ship secretly ordered by the American Commissioners from the Nantes shipowner . This 400 ton 'merchant' ship, then named the ''Lyon'', with 32 gun emplacements, was fitted with 24 cannons and was built by Bourmaud. The number of cannons attracted the attention of the local maritime authorities, who notified the Minister of Marine. Having been paid through a Paris banker, Jean Peltier denied any other use apart from trade, and, on 3 November 1777, indicated in the deed of purchase that there was "absolutely no foreign involvement" and that the ship would be commanded by a Frenchman, Barthélémy Corvaisier, on the voyage to Santo Domingo. Even though suspicions had not completely disappeared, fortunately French intentions towards the USA had changed and Jean Peltier was encouraged to hasten the preparation of the ship. HMS ''Deane'' was a , originally to be built for the U.S. Navy as a . Before she was finished in 1943, she was transferred to the Royal Navy under the terms of Lend-Lease, and saw service during World War II. Constructed by the Bethlehem-Hingham Shipyard Inc. in Massachusetts, and was assigned with the hull number DE-86 but no name. The warship was launched on 29 September 1943 and was commissioned into the Royal Navy on 26 November of that year. She served for three years with the British as HMS ''Deane'', and operated mainly in British waters and escorting Arctic convoys.
