Dean Of Guildford
The Dean of Guildford is the head (''primus inter pares'' – first among equals) and chair of the chapter of canons, the ruling body of Guildford Cathedral. Guildford Cathedral
The Cathedral Church of the Holy Spirit, Guildford, commonly known as Guildford Cathedral, is the Anglican cathedral at Guildford, Surrey, England. Richard Onslow donated the first of land on which the cathedral stands, with Viscount Bennett, a former Prime Minister of Canada, purchasing the remaining land and donating it to the cathedral in 1947. Designed by Edward Maufe and built between 1936 and 1961, it is the seat of the Bishop of Guildford. Construction The Diocese of Guildford was created in 1927, covering most of Surrey. Work began nine years later on its cathedral. Following a design competition, The Cathedral Committee chose Edward Maufe (later Sir Edward Maufe) as its architect and the foundation stone was laid by Cosmo Lang, Archbishop of Canterbury, in 1936. Guildford
Guildford () is a town in west Surrey, around southwest of central London. As of the 2011 census, the town has a population of about 77,000 and is the seat of the wider Borough of Guildford, which had around inhabitants in . The name "Guildford" is thought to derive from a crossing of the River Wey, a tributary of the River Thames that flows through the town centre. The earliest evidence of human activity in the area is from the Mesolithic and Guildford is mentioned in the will of Alfred the Great from . The Bishop of Guildford is the Ordinary of the Church of England Diocese of Guildford in the Province of Canterbury. The title had first appeared as a suffragan See in the Diocese of Winchester in 1874. The Bishop suffragan of Guildford assisted the Bishop of Winchester in overseeing that diocese. Dianna Lynn Gwilliams DL (born 1957) is the current dean of Guildford. Background Gwilliams was born in Colorado and grew up in California. She was educated at the University of California (BA Physics & Chemistry, 1978) and King's College London (MA, 2001) in Youth Ministry and Theological Education. In 1978, she travelled to the UK while she was on tour (as a sound engineer) for a musical called The Witness. She was a sound engineer for 12 years. Clergy Gwilliams was ordained deacon in 1992 and priest in 1994. After serving curacies at the St Saviour, Peckhamknown locally as the Copleston Church and Centre and St Barnabas, Dulwich she became Vicar of Saint Barnabas, Dulwich and Foundation Chaplain of Alleyn's College in 1999. George Clarkson
George William Clarkson (11 December 1897 – 15 August 1977) was an Anglican bishop in the 20th century. Clarkson was educated at New College, Oxford and ordained in 1927. Tony Bridge
Antony Cyprian "Tony" Bridge (5 September 1914 – 23 April 2007) was a British artist who became an Anglican priest. He was Dean of Guildford for 18 years, from 1968 to 1986, and wrote several books on the history of Constantinople and the Crusades. Education and painting Bridge's father was Royal Navy Commander Cyprian Dunscomb Charles Bridge. Bridge and his younger brother, Nigel, were educated at Marlborough College. His brother became a barrister and then a judge, serving as a Lord of Appeal in Ordinary from 1980 to 1992. After school, where his artistic talent had been recognised, Bridge studied at the Royal Academy School of Art, where he was influenced by Post-Impressionism. Living on a small private income, he became an artist in the 1930s. Alexander Gillan Wedderspoon (3 April 1931 – 10 June 2014) was an Anglican priest, academic, and British Army officer. He was Dean of Guildford from 1987 to 2001. Early life Wedderspoon was born on 3 April 1931 in Glasgow, Scotland. His father was a Church of Scotland minister. He was educated at Westminster School, then an all-boys public school in London. After his military service, he went on to study at Jesus College, Oxford. Career Military service Wedderspoon undertook National Service as a commissioned officer in the British Army. He was commissioned on 1 April 1950 as a second lieutenant in the Royal Regiment of Artillery. On 16 December 1951, he was granted the acting rank of lieutenant. Victor Andrew Stock AKC (born 24 December 1944) is a retired English Anglican priest. He was the Dean of Guildford in the Church of England. Apart from his being an Associate of King's College, he is also a member of the Order of Australia (OAM), an (Honorary) Doctor of the University of Surrey, and Fellow of the Royal Society of Arts (FRSA). He is now Priest Vicar of Westminster Abbey. He has taken part in many discussions on science and religion and was featured as a guest on BBC Radio 4's The Infinite Monkey Cage 2012 and 2015 Christmas specials. Stock was educated at Christopher Wren School, West London and King's College London.
