Deadzone (Skirmish Game)
''Deadzone'' is a 28 to 32 mm scale science-fiction skirmish tabletop wargame created by Mantic Games. Background ''Deadzone'' began as a Kickstarter project in 2012, and is currently in its 3rd edition. The 1st edition was designed by Guy Haley and Jake Thornton, and began shipping to backers in November 2013. The 2nd edition was launched in 2016, and the 3rd edition of the game was released in September 2021. The game is set in Mantic Game's fictional ''Warpath'' universe, in which mankind has spread across the galaxy and established hegemony among the stars. The eponymous "dead zones" in the game's title refers to worlds abandoned, quarantined, blockaded or otherwise prohibited by the galaxy's ruling council. The players assume the role of one of ten possible factions fighting over the ruins of these dead zones for plunder, research or whatever suitably plausible narrative explanation befitting their faction's background. Mantic Games
Mantic Games is a British miniatures and board game publisher, based in Bulwell, Nottingham, UK. History Mantic Games was started in 2008 by former Games Workshop Managing Director, Ronnie Renton with a range of high-fantasy miniatures that were compatible with other popular wargames, including Warhammer Fantasy Battles. It later began publishing board games and miniature games, notable titles include Kings of War, Dwarf King's Hold, Dungeon Saga, Dreadball, Deadzone, Project Pandora, Warpath and Loka. It has also produced the licensed-game ''Mars Attacks''—based on the Topps card game series and the Deadzone rules. Tactical Wargame
Tactical wargames are a type of wargame that models military conflict at a tactical level, i.e. units range from individual vehicles and squads to platoons or companies. These units are rated based on types and ranges of individual weaponry. The first tactical wargames were played as miniatures, extended to board games, and they are now also enjoyed as video games. The games are designed so that a knowledge of military tactics will facilitate good gameplay. Tactical wargames offer more of a challenge to the designer, as fewer variables or characteristics inherent in the units being simulated are directly quantifiable. Modern commercial board wargaming avoided tactical subjects for many years, but since initial attempts at the subject appeared, it has remained a favourite topic among wargamers. Forge Fathers
A forge is a type of hearth used for heating metals, or the workplace (smithy) where such a hearth is located. The forge is used by the smith to heat a piece of metal to a temperature at which it becomes easier to shape by forging, or to the point at which work hardening no longer occurs. The metal (known as the "workpiece") is transported to and from the forge using tongs, which are also used to hold the workpiece on the smithy's anvil while the smith works it with a hammer. Sometimes, such as when hardening steel or cooling the work so that it may be handled with bare hands, the workpiece is transported to the slack tub, which rapidly cools the workpiece in a large body of water. However, depending on the metal type, it may require an oil quench or a salt brine instead; many metals require more than plain water hardening.
