De Notenkraker
''De Notenkraker'' (Dutch: "The Nutcracker") was a Dutch political and satirical weekly magazine published between 1907 and 1936. In 1902 ''Het Zondagsblad'' appeared for the first time, a Sunday supplement to the newspaper '' Het Volk'' of the Social Democratic Workers' Party (Dutch acronym: SDAP). In 1907 the supplement was renamed ''De Notenkraker''. Unlike ''Het Volk'', which contained mostly heavy political articles with few illustration, ''De Notenkraker'' contained many cartoons and other illustrations. Famous cartoonist from the early period of the periodical included Leendert Jordaan and Albert Hahn, senior. Hahn drew cartoons against the Dutch monarchy and Abraham Kuyper (prime minister 1901-1905 and founder of the Anti-Revolutionary Party. Maypole
A maypole is a tall wooden pole erected as a part of various European folk festivals, around which a maypole dance often takes place. The festivals may occur on 1 May or Pentecost (Whitsun), although in some countries it is instead erected at Midsummer (20–26 June). In some cases the maypole is a permanent feature that is only utilised during the festival, although in other cases it is erected specifically for the purpose before being taken down again. Primarily found within the nations of Germanic languages, Germanic Europe and the neighbouring areas which they have influenced, its origins remain unknown. It has often been speculated that the maypole originally had some importance in the Germanic paganism of Iron Age and early Medieval cultures, and that the tradition survived Christianisation, albeit losing any original meaning that it had. The ''rijksdaalder'' (Dutch, "Imperial dollar") was a Dutch coin first issued by the Republic of the Seven United Netherlands in the late 16th century during the Dutch Revolt which featured an armored half bust of William the Silent. Jan Rot (25 December 1957 – 22 April 2022) was a Dutch singer-songwriter born in Makassar, who was famous in the Netherlands for his many translations of songs, pop as well as classical ones. His Dutch translation of Bach's ''St Matthew Passion The ''St Matthew Passion'' (german: Matthäus-Passion, links=-no), BWV 244, is a '' Passion'', a sacred oratorio written by Johann Sebastian Bach in 1727 for solo voices, double choir and double orchestra, with libretto by Picander. Tjerk Bottema
Tjerk Bottema (4 March 1882 – 1940) was a Dutch painter and editorial cartoonist. Biography At age 14, Bottema was sent to the Rijkskweekschool in Maastricht where he studied drawing. Later he studied at the Rijksakademie van Beeldende Kunsten, where art nouveau was the dominant style. During this time Bottema also started drawing advertisements, an activity that would later make him famous. In 1909 he has his first major success with the painting “Maaiers”, one year later he won the prestigious Prix de Rome. During World War I he visited the Western Front to make an illustrated report for the newspaper De Amsterdammer. After the war he settled in Paris, finding a job writing travel reports for De Notenkraker.
