DeQuincy High School
DeQuincy High School is a senior high school in DeQuincy, Louisiana, United States. It is a part of Calcasieu Parish Public Schools. History A man named Mr. D. D. Hereford began teaching in DeQuincy in 1899. In 1910 a dedicated brick school building opened for 148 students. The Louisiana State Department of Education declared it an approved high school in 1913. The following year it moved into a new brick building and had an enrollment of about 700. A storm destroyed two of the school's buildings in 1918, and the school moved into rebuilt facilities. The Southern Association of Colleges and Secondary Schools began accrediting the school in 1920. One school building was destroyed by a fire in 1943. The high school moved to its present site in 1959–60. The school building that replaced the one destroyed by the first fire was destroyed by a 1970 fire that also damaged the gymnasium. Athletics DeQuincy High athletics competes in the LHSAA. DeQuincy is the northernmost city in Calcasieu Parish, Louisiana, United States. The population was 3,235 at the 2010 census. DeQuincy is part of the Lake Charles metropolitan statistical area. History DeQuincy was founded in 1897 as a railroad town with the Calcasieu, Vernon & Shreveport Railway Company (CV&S) having been completed and Arthur Stilwell's Kansas City, Shreveport & Gulf Railway Company (KCS&G), that was owned by the Kansas City, Pittsburg and Gulf Railroad (KCP&G), completed in 1897. On 8 March 1944, two Air Force aircraft from nearby Barksdale Air Force Base collided overhead killing seven people. Calcasieu Parish (; french: Paroisse de Calcasieu) is a parish located on the southwestern border of the U.S. state of Louisiana. As of the 2020 census, the population was 216,785. The parish seat is Lake Charles. Calcasieu Parish is part of the Lake Charles metropolitan statistical area; it is also located near the Beaumont–Port Arthur (Texas), Lafayette, and Alexandria metropolitan areas. Calcasieu Parish was created March 24, 1840, from the parish of Saint Landry, one of the original nineteen civil parishes established by the Louisiana Legislature in 1807 after the United States acquired the territory in the Louisiana Purchase of 1803. The original parish seat was Comasaque Bluff, a settlement east of the river and later called Marsh Bayou Bluff. On December 8, 1840, it was renamed as Marion, Louisiana. The Louisiana High School Athletic Association (LHSAA) is the agency that regulates and promotes the interscholastic athletic competitions of all high schools in the state of Louisiana. Organization LHSAA was founded in Baton Rouge, Louisiana in October 1920. The LHSAA's main office was in Hammond from 1953 until 1972, when it returned to Baton Rouge. The LHSAA is governed by an Executive Director and an executive committee, with representatives from each of the association's class divisions.
