Davis Coal And Coke Company Administrative Building
Davis Coal and Coke Company Administrative Building, also known as Western Maryland Railway Engineering Building and Old Western Maryland Railroad Office, is a historic office building located at Thomas, Tucker County, West Virginia. It was built in 1900 and expanded about 1903, and is a two-story, red brick office building. The rectangular plan building measures approximately 40 feet by 70 feet. It has a hipped roof with secondary dormer windows. It served as the "field operating office" or "mining headquarters" for Davis Coal and Coke Company from 1900 to 1950. It was then used by Western Maryland Railway until closing in 1982. It was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 2011. Thomas, West Virginia
Thomas is a city and former coal town in Tucker County, West Virginia, United States. The population was 623 at the 2020 census. History Thomas was platted in 1884. Thomas was named for Thomas Beall Davis (1828-1911), brother of Senator Henry Gassaway Davis. The Davis brothers, in 1883, opened a mine near Thomas and had coal ready to ship when their railway arrived a year later. By 1892, Davis Coal and Coke was among the largest and best known coal companies in the world and employed 1,600 people. At the peak of its operations in 1915, there were nine producing mines within a mile of the company's office in Thomas. Immigrants flocked to the area as miners, railroad laborers, or merchants. The Company employed a man named Wladyslaw Dackiewicz as an interpreter. He could speak, read, and write eight languages and his services were much in demand with the influx of immigrants. Tucker County is a county in the U.S. state of West Virginia. As of the 2020 census, the population was 6,762, making it West Virginia's fourth-least populous county. Its county seat is Parsons. The county was created in 1856 from a part of Randolph County, then part of Virginia. In 1871, a small part of Barbour County, was transferred to Tucker County. The county was named after Henry St. George Tucker, Sr., a judge and Congressman from Williamsburg, Virginia. Western Maryland Railway
The Western Maryland Railway was an American Class I railroad (1852–1983) which operated in Maryland, West Virginia, and Pennsylvania. It was primarily a coal hauling and freight railroad, with a small passenger train operation. The WM became a property of the Chessie System holding company in 1973, although it continued independent operations until May 1975 after which time many of its lines were abandoned in favor of parallel Baltimore and Ohio Railroad lines. In 1983 it was fully merged into the Baltimore & Ohio Railroad, which later was also merged with the former Chesapeake and Ohio Railroad into the Chessie System in 1987, which is now renamed as CSX Transportation.
