David Stewart (RAF Officer)
Flight Lieutenant David Arthur Stewart, (8 March 1890 – 24 December 1924) was a British First World War flying ace credited with sixteen aerial victories. Remarkably, they were all scored while he was flying bombers instead of fighters. World War I service Stewart served in the Royal Flying Corps, and gained his first two victories over German fighters on 1 and 3 August 1916 while flying with No. 20 Squadron RFC as an Air Mechanic 2nd Class observer in the front seat of a F.E.2b. He then trained as a pilot, and Corporal Stewart was awarded Royal Aero Club Aviator's Certificate No. 3958 after soloing a Maurice Farman biplane at the Military School at Brooklands on 7 December 1916. He completed his flying training, and on 29 May 1917 Sergeant Stewart was commissioned as a temporary second lieutenant, and appointed a flying officer. A WikiProject, or Wikiproject, is a Wikimedia movement affinity group for contributors with shared goals. WikiProjects are prevalent within the largest wiki, Wikipedia, and exist to varying degrees within sister projects such as Wiktionary, Wikiquote, Wikidata, and Wikisource. Second lieutenant is a junior commissioned officer military rank in many armed forces, comparable to NATO OF-1 rank. Australia The rank of second lieutenant existed in the military forces of the Australian colonies and Australian Army until 1986. In the colonial forces, which closely followed the practices of the British military, the rank of second lieutenant began to replace ranks such as ensign and cornet from 1871. New appointments to the rank of second lieutenant ceased in the regular army in 1986. Group Captain Reginald Stuart Maxwell, (20 July 1894 – 1 July 1960) was a British flying ace during World War I. He continued in RAF service until 1941, and served in the RNVR during World War II. Early life Reginald Stuart Maxwell was born in Willesden to Nellie and John A. Maxwell. World War I On 22 September 1914 Maxwell was commissioned as a temporary second lieutenant in the 8th (Service) Battalion, East Yorkshire Regiment, but on 25 January 1915 he was seconded as a lieutenant for service with the 21st Divisional Cyclist Company. On 10 June his unit became part of the Army Cyclist Corps. Maxwell transferred the Royal Flying Corps. The term scout, as a description of a class of military aircraft, came into use shortly before the First World War, and initially referred to a fast (for its time), light (usually single-seated) unarmed reconnaissance aircraft. "Scout" types were generally adaptations of pre-war racing aircraft – although at least one (the Royal Aircraft Factory S.E.2) was specifically designed for the role. Fokker was a Dutch aircraft manufacturer named after its founder, Anthony Fokker. The company operated under several different names. William Miller (RAF Officer)
Squadron Leader William Miller, (12 May 1892 – 12 April 1962) was a British flying ace of the First World War, who was credited with six aerial victories. Miller worked in the Royal Air Force Educational Service between the World Wars. He returned to service for the Second World War, rising to the rank of Squadron Leader. Early life and British Army Miller was born in Newcastle upon Tyne on 12 May 1892, and graduated from Durham University before joining the British Army at the start of the First World War. He first served as a second lieutenant in a Reserve Battalion of the Northumberland Fusiliers until 15 July 1915, when he was transferred to the 20th (Service) Battalion (1st Tyneside Scottish), for service in France. Captain Lewis Isaac Collins (born 7 November 1894 – 1 June 1971) was a Scottish World War I flying ace credited with five aerial victories. Biography Collins was born in Dundee, Scotland, the son of Isaac John and Helen Isles (née McFee) Collins. He was educated at the High School of Dundee. He first served as a sapper in the City of Dundee (Fortress) Engineers, a Royal Engineers Territorial Force unit, before being commissioned as a second lieutenant in the Black Watch (Royal Highlanders) on 20 September 1915.
