David Sadler (13 February 1921 – 5 March 2014) was a British yacht designer who was responsible for a number of classic production yachts during the period from 1960 to 1980. Tollesbury
Tollesbury is a village in England, located on the Essex coast at the mouth of the River Blackwater. It is situated nine miles east of the historic port of Maldon and twelve miles south of Colchester. For centuries Tollesbury, the village of the plough and sail, relied on the harvests of the land and the sea. The main trade and export of Tollesbury, which still thrives to this day, has long been oysters. Governance An electoral ward in the same name exists. the population of this ward at the 2011 Census was 1,977. Bay Of Islands
The Bay of Islands is an area on the east coast of the Far North District of the North Island of New Zealand. It is one of the most popular fishing, sailing and tourist destinations in the country, and has been renowned internationally for its big-game fishing since American author Zane Grey publicised it in the 1930s. It is north-west of the city of Whangarei. Cape Reinga, at the northern tip of the country, is about by road further to the north-west. Geography The bay itself is an irregularly-shaped -wide, drowned valley system and a natural harbour. It contains 144 islands, of which the largest is Urupukapuka, and numerous peninsulas and inlets. The three largest inlets are Waikare Inlet in the south, and Kerikeri and Te Puna (Mangonui) inlets in the north-west. Contessa 26
The Contessa 26 is a 7.77 meter (25.6 ft) fiberglass monohull sailboat, brought about when Jeremy Rogers, with a background in traditional wooden boatbuilding along with one of his Folkboat customers, David Sadler, created a modified version of the same boat in glass reinforced plastic (GRP). Rigged as a masthead sloop, with a deep keel and a hull-mounted rudder, the Contessa 26 was launched in 1966 and early boats proved to be very successful racers, including long-distance events. Jeremy Rogers Limited went on to produce the Contessa 32. Design evolution The design characteristics of the Contessa 26 comes from the Nordic Folkboat which was conceived by the Royal Gothenburg Sailing Club in 1939 as a new one design class for the masses which would provide more accommodation for the cruising family than the traditional Dragon Class. Contessa 32
The Contessa 32 is a 9.75 metre (32 ft) fibreglass monohull sailing yacht, designed in 1970 by David Sadler in collaboration with yachtbuilder Jeremy Rogers, as a larger alternative to the Contessa 26. With over 750 hulls built, the yacht has become the most successful one-design cruiser-racer of all time. The yachts have a masthead sloop rig, with a fin keel and a skeg-mounted rudder, a cutting edge concept for the period which now represents a cross between newer and older designs. The Contessa 32 is seaworthy enough for offshore voyages in extreme weather conditions, but also performs well in races, and as a one-design racing class is administered by an active Association. The trait most often associated with the Contessa 32 though is its ability to endure harsh weather and rough seas. Sadler 25
The Sadler 25 is a 7.42-meter (24 ft 4 in) fiberglass sailing yacht, designed in 1974 by David Sadler of Great Britain as an evolution of his earlier Contessa 26 which was in turn an evolution of the Nordic Folkboat. Although both the Folkboat and the Contessa 25 had relatively narrow long keel hulls, Sadler's new design utilised a wider hull to give more form stability and the (then) new fin keel together with a skeg-mounted rudder. Built between 1974 and 1981, the Sadler 25 was normally rigged as a masthead sloop, and was offered with the option of deep or shallow fin keels, twin bilge keels or a centre plate. In its deep-fin configuration, the Sadler 25 was a successful cruiser-racer which quickly became popular in yacht clubs throughout the U.K., and completed Round Britain and Trans-Atlantic voyages. Sadler 29
The Sadler 29 is a popular British sailing yacht designed by David Sadler. Over 400 Sadler 29s were produced. In April 1988 the Sadler 29 was the oldest design to take part in Yachting World’s Mini Rally. Construction The hull is made of GRP with a full GRP inner molding, the space between these skins is filled with polyurethane foam, this meant the boat is unsinkable in the event of taking on water. If the boat should become full of water she should still float according to the famous Archimedes principle. Pg 211 helps explain why designers thought that there was a need for an unsinkable yacht to promote further safety at sea.
