David Martin (Kansas Judge)
David Martin (October 16, 1839 – March 2, 1901) was a chief justice of the Kansas Supreme Court from April 30, 1895, to January 11, 1897. Life and education Martin was born October 16, 1839, in Catawba, Ohio, and after his basic education worked as a miller from the age of 17 for 6 years. In was during the last two years working the mill that he also studied law. He was admitted to the bar in Ohio in 1866, and started to practice law in Mechanicsburg, Ohio. On June 2, 1867, he moved to Atchison County, Kansas and opened up a law office not long after arrival. He was married to Melissa the daughter of William B. Kipp, an early settler of the area, in 1882 and they has no children together. In the American Civil War he served in Kentucky, Tennessee and Virginia as a member of the 129th Ohio Infantry, and was at the surrender of Cumberland Gap. Stephen Haley Allen (March 19, 1847 – October 26, 1931) was an associate justice of the Kansas Supreme Court from January 9, 1893 to January 9, 1899. Early life, education, and career Born in Sinclairville, Chautauqua County, New York, Allen was educated in the village school,Clark Bell, ed., ''The Medico-legal Journal'', Vol. 18 (1900), p. 74-75. until the end of his formal education in 1862.R. Frank Doster
Frank Doster (January 19, 1847 – February 25, 1933) was a chief justice of the Kansas Supreme Court from January 11, 1897, to January 12, 1903. Early life, education, and career Born in Morgan County, Virginia in 1847, Doster spent most of his childhood on a farm in Indiana. At the age of just 15 he enlisted for the civil war as part of the Eleventh Indiana Cavalry. After he served in the civil war then returned to Indiana and started to study law. Judicial service Doster was elected district judge for Marion, Kansas in 1872, and served for multiple terms, having been elected as a Republican. His views progressed and he evolved to other affiliations such as the Greenback Union Labor, People's, and the Bryan wing of the Democratic parties. He was considered a prominent "champion of liberal ideology" within Kansas. He has been attacked as a socialist and an anarchist due to his views on individual property rights. Edmund Needham Morrill
Edmund Needham Morrill (February 12, 1834 – March 14, 1909) was a U.S. Congressman from Kansas and the 13th Governor of Kansas. Biography Edmund Needham Morrill was born in Westbrook, Maine, to Rufus and Mary (Webb) Morrill. He attended the common schools at Westbrook Academy and learned the trade of tanning from his father. At the age of 23, he moved to Kansas. In 1861, he enlisted as a private in Company C, 7th Kansas Cavalry. Within a year, he was a captain, and by 1865 he was a major. After the Civil War, he entered the banking business and remained in that business for the rest of his life. Morrill married twice, first to Elizabeth A. Brettum whom he married on November 27, 1862. Elizabeth died November 1868 at Hiawatha, Kansas. Morrill's second wife was Caroline Jenkins Nash, whom he married December 25, 1869. They had three children, all born at Hiawatha.
