David J. And May Bock Woodward House
The David J. and May Bock Woodward House is a historic house in the Alta Vista district of the Bexar County city of San Antonio in the U.S. state of Texas. It was designated a Recorded Texas Historic Landmark in 1994. It was placed on the National Register of Historic Places listings in Bexar County, Texas on February 16, 1996. This -story Classic revival home was designed 1904–1905 by architect Atlee Ayres for businessman David J. Woodward (1864–1925) and his wife May Bock Woodward (1866–1942). The couple flipped twenty-three homes during their married life. David built the houses, and May decorated them. Each property would eventually be sold for profit when the couple moved upward to a more expensive residence. History Of San Antonio
The City of San Antonio is one of the oldest Spanish settlements in Texas and was, for decades, its largest city. Before Spanish colonization, the site was occupied for thousands of years by varying cultures of indigenous peoples. The historic Payaya Indians were likely those who encountered the first Europeans. The "Villa de Bejar" was founded by Spanish explorers on May 5, 1718, by then Governor Martin Alarcon, at the headwaters of the San Pedro Creek. Recorded Texas Historic Landmark (RTHL) is a designation awarded by the Texas Historical Commission for historically and architecturally significant properties in the U.S. state of Texas. RTHL is a legal designation and the highest honor the state can bestow on a historic structure. Purchase and display of a historical marker is a required component of the RTHL designation process. Because it is a legal designation, owners of RTHL-designated structures must give 60 days' notice before any alterations are made to the exterior of the structure. The Woman's Club of San Antonio is a philanthropic civic organization located in Bexar County, Texas, Bexar County in the U.S. state of Texas. It was founded October 1, 1898 by Mary Eleanor Brackenridge, Marin B. Fenwick and sixteen other individuals who had been inspired by the National Federation of Women's Clubs. Brackenridge served as the organization's first president. The sororal organization is the oldest civic organization in San Antonio. Atlee Ayres
Atlee Bernard Ayres (July 12, 1873 – November 6, 1969) was an American architect. He lived in central Texas. History Atlee B. Ayres was born in Hillsboro, Ohio, on July 12, 1873, the son of Nathan Tandy and Mary Parsons Ayres. The family moved to Texas, lived in Houston, and then moved to San Antonio in 1888, where Ayres's father managed the Alamo Flats luxury apartment hotel for many years. In 1890, Ayres went to New York to study at the Metropolitan School of Architecture, a subsidiary of Columbia University. There, he won first prize in the school's annual design competition. His teachers included William Ware, a student of Richard Morris Hunt. Ayres took drawing lessons at the Art Students League at night and studied painting under the noted teacher and artist Frank Vincent DuMond.
