David Cohen (art Critic)
David Cohen is an American art critic, art historian, curator and publisher. He is the editor of artcritical.com, which he founded in 2001. Cohen is also the organizer and moderator of The Review Panel, an ongoing public discussion forum which he launched in 2004, and has been hosted by the National Academy Museum and School and the Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts. He teaches at Pratt Institute, the Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts, the Fashion Institute of Technology and other institutions. Career In the decade before he moved to New York City Cohen pursued a career as a fine arts journalist in his native London where he wrote for such publications as ''Art Monthly'', ''Burlington Magazine'' and ''Modern Painters'', as well as newspapers, including ''The Independent'' and the ''New Statesman''. Art Critic
An art critic is a person who is specialized in analyzing, interpreting, and evaluating art. Their written critiques or reviews contribute to art criticism and they are published in newspapers, magazines, books, exhibition brochures, and catalogues and on websites. Some of today's art critics use art blogs and other online platforms in order to connect with a wider audience and expand debate about art. Differently from art history, there is not an institutionalized training for art critics (with only few exceptions); art critics come from different backgrounds and they may or may not be university trained. Professional art critics are expected to have a keen eye for art and a thorough knowledge of art history. Typically the art critic views art at exhibitions, galleries, museums or artists' studios and they can be members of the International Association of Art Critics which has national sections. New York Studio School
The New York Studio School of Drawing, Painting and Sculpture at 8 West 8th Street, in Greenwich Village, Manhattan, New York City, New York State is an art school formed in 1963 by a group of students and their teacher, Mercedes Matter, all of whom had become disenchanted with the fragmented nature of art instruction inside traditional art programs and universities. Today it occupies the building that previously housed the Whitney Museum of American Art. Jerry Saltz
Jerry Saltz (born February 19, 1951, in Chicago, Illinois) is an American art critic. Since 2006, he has been senior art critic and columnist for '' New York'' magazine. Roberta Smith
Roberta Smith (born 1948) is co-chief art critic of ''The New York Times'' and a lecturer on contemporary art. She is the first woman to hold that position. Arthur Danto
Arthur Coleman Danto (January 1, 1924 – October 25, 2013) was an American art critic, philosopher, and professor at Columbia University. He was best known for having been a long-time art critic for ''The Nation'' and for his work in philosophical aesthetics and philosophy of history, though he contributed significantly to a number of fields, including the philosophy of action. Svetlana Alpers
Svetlana Leontief Alpers (born February 10, 1936) is an American art historian, also a professor, writer and critic. Her specialty is Dutch Golden Age painting, a field she revolutionized with her 1984 book ''The Art of Describing''. She has also written on Tiepolo, Rubens, Bruegel, and Velázquez, among others. Michael Martin Fried (born April 12, 1939 in New York City) is a modernist art critic and art historian. He studied at Princeton University and Harvard University and was a Rhodes Scholar at Merton College, Oxford. He is the J.R. Merlin James
Merlin James (born 1960 in Cardiff, Wales) is an artist living and working in Glasgow, Scotland. Life and work James studied at Central School of Art and Design, London, and the Royal College of Art, London.
