In journalism, a dateline describes the date when and location where a news article originated. Dateline
A dateline is a brief piece of text included in news articles that describes where and when the story was written or filed, though the date is often omitted. In the case of articles reprinted from wire services, the distributing organization is also included (though the originating one is not). Datelines are traditionally placed on the first line of the text of the article, before the first sentence. Format The location appears first, usually starting with the city in which the reporter has written or dispatched the report. City names are usually printed in uppercase, though this can vary from one publication to another. The political division and/or nation the city is in may follow, but they may be dropped if the city name is widely recognizable due to its size or political importance (a national capital, for instance). ''Dateline'' is an Australian television international current affairs program broadcast on SBS. Since its debut at on Friday 19 October 1984, it has focused largely on international events, often in developing or warring nations. In 2015 the program changed its format going from one-hour episodes featuring multiple stories, to half-hour single subject episodes. The series focuses on under-reported stories from around the globe, with a documentary style. It is broadcast on Tuesdays at 9.30pm following Insight, and all episodes are available to view on SBS On Demand. It remains the longest-running international current affairs program in Australia. ''Dateline'' (French ''Je me souviens'') is a Canadian historical drama television series which aired on CBC Television and Radio-Canada television from 1955 to 1956. Premise This series provided dramatic performances based on Canadian history. It was produced in English and French versions with the same performers. Canadian military and public archives provided research material to support the historical background of the dramas. ''Dateline'' referenced events such as the Battle of Fort Oswego (1756), construction of the Rideau Canal (1826–1832), Red River Rebellion (1870), Canadian participation in the Nile Expedition (1884) and the North-West Rebellion (1885). "Ferguson's Crime", the debut episode, is set after Battle of the Plains of Abraham. ''Dateline London'' is a weekly BBC News discussion programme. A panel of four leading journalists, lecturers, and foreign correspondents discussed top news stories from an international perspective. The last episode made was on the 15th October 2022. Production Prior to the COVID-19 pandemic, ''Dateline London'' was recorded live on Saturday at 11.30am on the BBC News Channel and BBC World News. It always featured four guests in a round-table discussion of the weeks' main stories. When the pandemic curtailed all in-person activities, only three guests participated in the programme. Two foreign correspondents from other news agencies or papers joined the programme virtually, with an in-studio guest usually being a relevant BBC correspondent with previous background to the stories being covered. ''Dateline NBC'' is a weekly American television news magazine/reality legal show that is broadcast on NBC. It was previously the network's flagship general interest news magazine, but now focuses mainly on true crime stories with only occasional editions that focus on other topics. The program airs Fridays at 10:00 p.m. Eastern Time (9:00 p.m. Eastern for special two-hour editions). Special Saturday encore editions also air at 9:00 p.m. (two-hour editions at 8:00 p.m.). John Richard Patterson (17 May 1945 – 29 January 1997) was the founder of the UK-based computer dating service Dateline. ''The Guardian'' called him "history's most successful Cupid," while ''The Times'' characterized Dateline as "probably the largest, longest established and most successful computer dating service in the world." Biography Patterson was born in Hertfordshire and educated at Bishop's Stortford College. The son of a banker, he earned a degree in mechanical engineering from the University of London in 1966. He founded Dateline in 1966 after a trip to Harvard University, where he had seen a computer used to match partners at a freshman's ball. The company was founded with £50.00, which he had borrowed from his parents, and later used an IBM computer. The International Date Line (IDL) is an internationally accepted demarcation on the surface of Earth, running between the South and North Poles and serving as the boundary between one calendar day and the next. It passes through the Pacific Ocean, roughly following the 180° line of longitude and deviating to pass around some territories and island groups. Crossing the date line eastbound decreases the date by one day, while crossing the date line westbound increases the date. 180th Meridian
The 180th meridian or antimeridian is the meridian (geography), meridian 180° both east and west of the prime meridian in a Geographic coordinate system, geographical coordinate system. The longitude at this line can be given as either east or west. On Earth, these two meridians form a great circle that divides the earth into the Western Hemisphere, Western and Eastern Hemispheres. The antimeridian mostly passes through the open waters of the Pacific Ocean, but also across land in Russia, Fiji, and Antarctica.
