Dasher (software)
Dasher is an input method and computer accessibility tool which enables users to compose text without using a keyboard, by entering text on a screen with a pointing device such as a mouse, touch screen, or mice operated by the foot or head. Such instruments could serve as prosthetic devices for disabled people who cannot use standard keyboards, or where the use of one is impractical. Dasher is free and open-source software, subject to the requirements of the GNU General Public License (GPL), version 2. Dasher is available for operating systems with GTK+ support, i.e. Linux, BSDs and other Unix-like including macOS, Microsoft Windows, Pocket PC, iOS and Android. Dasher was invented by David J. C. Dasher (Santa Claus's Reindeer)
In traditional festive legend and popular culture, Santa Claus's reindeer are said to pull a sleigh through the night sky to help Santa Claus deliver gifts to children on Christmas Eve. The number of reindeer characters, and the names given to them (if any) vary in different versions, but those frequently cited in the United States are the eight listed in Clement Clarke Moore's 1823 poem ''A Visit from St. Nicholas'', the work that is largely responsible for the reindeer becoming popularly known. In the poem the reindeers' names are given as Dasher, Dancer, Prancer, Vixen, Comet, Cupid, Donner and Blitzen. The popularity of Robert L. May's 1939 storybook ''Rudolph the Red-Nosed Reindeer'', and Gene Autry's 1949 Christmas song "Rudolph the Red-Nosed Reindeer", resulted in Rudolph often being included as the ninth character. Dasher is a town in Lowndes County, Georgia, United States. The population was 912 at the 2010 census, up from 834 at the 2000 census. History Dasher was established as a station on the route of the newly completed Georgia Southern and Florida Railway in 1889 at the residence of V. F. Dasher. The Georgia General Assembly incorporated Dasher in 1968. Geography Dasher is located in southeastern Lowndes County at (30.745391, -83.222919). U.S. Route 41 passes through the town, leading northwest to Valdosta, the county seat, and southeast to Lake Park. HMS ''Dasher'' was a which served with the Royal Navy. She was built by Yarrow Shipbuilders in 1895, served in home waters and was sold in 1911. Construction and design On 12 October 1893, the British Admiralty placed an order for three torpedo boat destroyers (, ''Dasher'' and ) with the shipbuilder Yarrow under the 1893–1894 shipbuilding programme for the Royal Navy as a follow-on to the two prototype destroyers ( and ) ordered from Yarrows under the 1892–1893 programme. HMS ''Dasher'' (D37) was a British Royal Navy aircraft carrier, of the , converted merchant vessels, and one of the shortest-lived escort carriers. She served in the Second World War and sank on 27 March 1943. HMS ''Dasher'' is an P2000 patrol and training vessel of the British Royal Navy. ''Dasher'' was built at Vosper Thorneycroft and commissioned in 1988. Operational history Prior to 2004, ''Dasher'' was based at Devonport as the training vessel for University Royal Naval Unit Bristol (URNUB). ''Dasher'' and were sent to Cyprus ahead of Operation Telic, the US-led invasion of Iraq in 2003, transported on board the CEC Mayflower. The Royal Navy Cyprus Squadron was created in February 2003, to protect ships around the Sovereign Base Areas in Cyprus, a vital staging post in the British logistic chain to Iraq. Danville Dashers
The Danville Dashers were a semi-professional ice hockey team that played in Danville, Illinois, United States, at the David S. Palmer Arena. Originally, the Dashers played in the Continental Hockey League (1972–1986), Continental Hockey League (CnHL) from 1981 to 1986. In their first season, they were coached by Gordie Gibson and were regular season and Wal-Mar playoff champions in 1981–82. William "Chick" Chalmers was then hired as the next head coach and eventually led the team to another playoff championship in 1984. Ken Wilson (ice hockey), Ken Wilson then moved to Danville and became general manager and head coach from 1984 to 1986. Danville Dashers (FHL)
The Danville Dashers were a hockey team from Danville, Illinois, in the Federal Prospects Hockey League. The Dashers were named in honor of the original Danville Dashers. From 2011 to 2020, the team played their home games at David S. Palmer Arena, which was also home to the original Dashers that played in the Continental Hockey League from 1981 to 1986, but were voted out of the arena in 2021. History The new Dashers were announced as a Federal Hockey League (FHL) expansion team in June 2011 to begin play in the 2011–12 season. Dasher High School
Dasher High School is a historic school in Valdosta, Georgia, United States that served African Americans. Inscribed 1929 in its cornerstone, the school was a high school for African Americans. James L. Lomax, a leader in African American education in Valdosta, served as the school's principal until his retirement in 1967. His adopted son Louis L. Lomax, the first African American broadcast journalist, attended Dasher High School. He was a civil rights activist and died in a car accident in 1970. The school's football team won a Georgia Interscholastic Association Class A football championship in 1953. The building was listed on the National Register of Historic Places on April 18, 1985. Frank Abbandando
Frank Abbandando (July 11, 1910 – February 19, 1942), nicknamed "The Dasher", was a New York City contract killer who committed many murders as part of the infamous Murder, Inc. gang. His preferred killing method was to stab his victims through the heart with an ice pick. After a trial and conviction for murdering a Brooklyn loan shark, he was executed in the electric chair at Sing Sing on February 19, 1942. Early years Abbandando's parents, Lorenzo Abbondandolo and Rosaria Famighetti, emigrated from Avellino, Italy, to New York City. He was born in New York on July 11, 1910. Abbandando was one of twelve children (of whom six did not survive childhood). Criminal career Abbandando began as a teenager extorting money from shop owners by threatening to torch their shops. John Joseph "Dasher" Troy (May 8, 1856 – March 30, 1938), was an American professional baseball player from 1877 to 1888. He played five seasons of Major League Baseball, principally as a second baseman, for the Detroit Wolverines (1881–82), Providence Grays (1882), New York Gothams (1883), and the New York Metropolitans (1884-85). He appeared in 292 major league games, 257 of them as a second baseman, and compiled a .243 batting average with 42 doubles, 20 triples, four home runs and 51 runs batted in. After retiring from baseball, Troy operated the beer concession at the Polo Grounds in the 1890s and later opened a café in his old home neighborhood at Tenth Avenue and 39th Street in Manhattan.
