Darkness, the direct opposite of lightness, is defined as a lack of lighting, illumination, an absence of visible spectrum, visible light, or a surface that absorbs light, such as black or brown. Human visual perception, vision is unable to distinguish colors in conditions of very low luminance. This is because the hue sensitive photoreceptor cells on the retina are inactive when light levels are insufficient, in the range of visual perception referred to as scotopic vision. The emotional response to darkness has generated metaphorical usages of the term in many cultures, often used to describe an unhappy or foreboding feeling. Gregory Stephen Perkins (born 28 December 1964), better known by his stage name Tex Perkins, is an Australian singer-songwriter who fronted the Australian rock band The Cruel Sea, but has also performed with the Beasts of Bourbon, Thug, James Baker Experience, The Butcher Shop, Salamander Jim, and Tex, Don and Charlie. It was released in Australia in May 1987, following a 4-year break where he returned to the theatre playing in Gilbert and Sullivan's comic opera '' The Pirates of Penzance'', winning three consecutive 'Entertainer of the Year' Mo Awards between 1983 and 1985. "Dark Horses" is a song written and recorded by the alternative rock band Switchfoot, and serves as the first single from their eighth studio album entitled ''Vice Verses.'' It was debuted on the band's official website on July 20, 2011 and serviced to radio on August 2, 2011. The release was announced on AllAccess/Mediabase and later confirmed by singer Jon Foreman during an interview with radio DJ Adrian Hummel. Song history The song first made a public appearance on June 10, 2010 in Amsterdam during Switchfoot's Hello Hurricane tour. The band sound-checked it once there, and also subsequently played it at several more shows during the fall leg of their tour. It was reworked afterwards during the studio sessions for ''Vice Verses'', and the band debuted the revamped version with a new chorus with different melodies and a re-worked second verse in Winnipeg, Manitoba, Canada in May 2011.
