Danza Contemporanea De Cuba
Danza Contemporanea de Cuba (Contemporary Dance of Cuba) is a contemporary dance company based in Havana, Cuba, combining modern American theatre, Afro-Caribbean dance styles and classical European Ballet. History The company was founded in 1959 as the Conjunto Nacional de Danza Moderna (National Modern Dance Ensemble) by Ramiro Guerra Suarez, who moulded Danza Contemporanea’s repertoire into a Cuban blend of ballet and folklore styles. In 1971 Guerra was separated from the company and ostracized by the government, although he was partially rehabilitated in 1978. It was in 1971 that the name of the company was changed to Danza Nacional de Cuba, until 1987; in that period the company went through several directors. Since 1987 Danza Contemporanea de Cubahas been under the direction of Miguel Iglesias, who started dancing with the company in 1975. Contemporary Dance
Contemporary dance is a genre of dance performance that developed during the mid-twentieth century and has since grown to become one of the dominant genres for formally trained dancers throughout the world, with particularly strong popularity in the U.S. and Europe. Although originally informed by and borrowing from classical, modern, and jazz styles, it has come to incorporate elements from many styles of dance. Due to its technical similarities, it is often perceived to be closely related to modern dance, ballet, and other classical concert dance styles. Rafael Bonachela
Rafael Bonachela is a Spanish-born, Australian choreographer notable for work across a range of art forms, including contemporary dance, art installations, pop concerts, musicals, film, commercials and fashion. He is recognised for his physical movement style of contemporary dance based on communicating emotions through the human form. Since 2009 he has been Artistic Director of the Sydney Dance Company in Walsh Bay, Sydney, New South Wales, Australia. Early Years Bonachela was born in La Garriga, a small town 45 km north of Barcelona in the Catalonia region of Spain, the eldest of four brothers. At the age of 15 he started dance training at Escola de Dansa Cadaqués Centre in Barcelona. At the age of seventeen he joined the Spanish troupe Lanònima Imperial where he performed and toured across Europe in productions of "Castor I Polux" and "Kairos". Modern Dance
Modern dance is a broad genre of western concert or theatrical dance which included dance styles such as ballet, folk, ethnic, religious, and social dancing; and primarily arose out of Europe and the United States in the late 19th and early 20th centuries. It was considered to have been developed as a rejection of, or rebellion against, classical ballet, and also a way to express social concerns like socioeconomic and cultural factors.
