Dante Benedetti Diamond at Max Ulrich Field is a baseball venue in San Francisco, California, United States. It is home to the San Francisco Dons baseball team of the NCAA Division I West Coast Conference. Built in 1953, the facility has a capacity of 2,000 spectators. The venue was originally called simply Max Ulrich Field. After its 1953 construction, it was named after Max Ulrich, a San Francisco resident who donated in his will $358,000 to the university. The field took on its current name in 1980. In that year, Dons baseball coach Dante Benedetti retired after 29 years in charge of the program. The diamond was dedicated to him that same year. Until Nino Giarratano surpassed him in 2012, Benedetti was the program's all-time winningest coach, with 373 wins. Nino Giarratano
Anthony "Nino" Giarratano (born June 2, 1962) is a former American college baseball coach, who served as head coach of the San Francisco Dons baseball team from 1999 to 2022. In March of 2022, Giarratano was fired from USF due to a class-action lawsuit that three former players targeted towards him which stated that Giarratano had inappropriate sexual conduct allegations. Early life and education Born in Pueblo, Colorado, Giarratano attended Pueblo South High School and graduated in 1980. He then attended William Jewell College in Liberty, Missouri, earning a degree in physical education in 1985. He later added a master's degree from Adams State College in Alamosa, Colorado. Coaching career In 1989, he began his coaching career at Trinidad State, a junior college in Trinidad, Colorado. In six seasons with the Trojans, Giarratano led teams to five NJCAA World Series. Dante Benedetti (May 16, 1919 – November 16, 2005) was an American restaurateur and collegiate baseball coach. He was born in San Francisco and remained there the rest of his life. His family owned New Pisa, a restaurant in San Francisco's North Beach neighborhood.
