Daniel O'Rourke (horse)
Daniel O'Rourke (1849 – after 1869) was a British Thoroughbred racehorse and sire. In a career that lasted from September 1851 to July 1853 he ran eleven times and won two races. In the summer of 1852, he proved himself one of the best British colts of his generation, winning the Derby at Epsom and the St James's Palace Stakes. Daniel O'Rourke came into the Derby as a maiden and won as an unconsidered outsider on heavy ground. He was one of the smallest Thoroughbreds to win a notable race, being technically a pony under some definitions of the term. Background Daniel O'Rourke was a compact, powerfully-built chestnut colt with a narrow white stripe and one white foot. He was bred by his owner John Bowes at Streatlam Castle, County Durham. Daniel O'Rourke (politician)
Daniel O'Rourke (died 4 August 1968) was an Irish politician and sportsman. He was born in the townland of Tents, near Manorhamilton, County Leitrim, but soon moved to County Roscommon, basing himself in Castlerea, where he worked as a teacher. He was a Gaelic footballer and later president of the Gaelic Athletic Association (GAA). He was a member of Roscommon County Council for 40 years, and a Teachta Dála (TD) for periods between 1921 and 1951. He was elected unopposed as a Sinn Féin TD to the 2nd Dáil at the 1921 elections for the Mayo South–Roscommon South constituency. He said later that his election came as a surprise to him, as he did not know he had been nominated and did not want to be. Although he opposed the Anglo-Irish Treaty, he voted in favour of it, as he believed the alternative of further war was worse. Thomas Crofton Croker
Thomas Crofton Croker (15 January 1798 – 8 August 1854) was an Irish antiquary, best known for his ''Fairy Legends and Traditions of the South of Ireland'' (1825–1828), and who also showed considerable interest in Irish song and music. Although ''Fairy Legends'' purported to be an anthology of tales Croker had collected on his field trips, he had lost his manuscript notes and the work had to be reconstructed with the help of friends. He did not acknowledge his debt satisfactorily in the estimation of Thomas Keightley, who voiced his complaint publicly, and soon published his own rival work. The other collaborators generally allowed Croker to take credit, notably William Maginn, though after his death his kinsmen insisted Maginn had written four or more of the tales. Croker retracted ten tales in his third edition of (1834), and after his death, a fourth edition (1859) appeared which was prefaced with a memoir written by his son. Danny O'Rourke (soccer)
Danny O'Rourke (born May 31, 1983) is a former American soccer player. Career High School and College O'Rourke played high school soccer at Worthington Kilbourne High School in Worthington, Ohio. He was captain during the 2000 season, during which they won the state championship. Named Ohio Capital Conference player of the year, All-Ohio Capital Conference First Team, All-District, and All-State. O'Rourke played college soccer for Indiana University from 2001 to 2004, starting every game he played in during his four years. Selected as All-Big 10 as a sophomore, junior, and senior, O'Rourke was named a first team All-American his senior season, also winning the Hermann Trophy while leading Indiana to a second consecutive NCAA Championship over UC Santa Barbara. O'Rourke finished his career at Indiana having played in 83 games, registering two goals and five assists.
