Dan Boone (baseball)
James Albert "Dan" Boone (January 19, 1895 – June 11, 1968) was an American professional baseball pitcher. He played in Major League Baseball (MLB) from 1919 to 1923 for the Philadelphia Athletics, Detroit Tigers, and Cleveland Indians. His younger brother, Ike, also played in the major leagues from 1922–32. Boone reached the majors in 1919 with the Philadelphia Athletics, spending one year with them before moving to the Detroit Tigers (1921) and Cleveland Indians (1922–1923).In a four-season career, he posted an 8–13 record with 25 strikeouts and a 5.10 earned run average in 162 innings pitched, including four complete games and two shutouts. In baseball, the pitcher is the player who throws ("pitches") the baseball from the pitcher's mound toward the catcher to begin each play, with the goal of retiring a batter, who attempts to either make contact with the pitched ball or draw a walk. In the numbering system used to record defensive plays, the pitcher is assigned the number 1. The pitcher is often considered the most important player on the defensive side of the game, and as such is situated at the right end of the defensive spectrum. Complete Games
In baseball, a complete game (CG) is the act of a pitcher pitching an entire game without the benefit of a relief pitcher. A pitcher who meets this criterion will be credited with a complete game regardless of the number of innings played—pitchers who throw an entire official game that is shortened by rain will still be credited with a complete game, while starting pitchers who are relieved in extra innings after throwing nine or more innings will not be credited with a complete game. A starting pitcher who is replaced by a pinch hitter in the final half inning of a game will still be credited with a complete game. The frequency of complete games has evolved since the early days of baseball. The complete game was essentially an expectation in the early 20th century and pitchers completed almost all of the games they started. History Late 18th and early 19th centuries A settlement established by Maroons or escaped slaves named Angola existed in Bradenton's present area starting in the late 1700s and ending in 1821. It is believed to been spread out between the Manatee River (then known as Oyster River) all the way to Sarasota Bay. The community is estimated to have had 600–750 residents in it. Angola was a rather large maroon settlement as the Manatee River at that time was too shallow for US Navy vessels to navigate.
