Dampiera Wellsiana
''Dampiera wellsiana'' is a herb in the family of Goodeniaceae and is one of approximately 70 species of ''Dampiera''. ''Dampiera wellsiana'' is native to Western Australia. It is a non-threatened, stoloniferous plant and is often defined by its small blue petals and the arid climate it grows in. Botanist Ferdinand von Mueller first described the plant in 1876. Etymology The genus name ''Dampiera'' was derived from William Dampier (1652-1715). Dampier was the first Englishman to explore Western Australia and collect native plants, including ''Dampiera wellsiana''. It is commonly known as Well's Dampiera. The species is dedicated to botanist Julia Wells (1842-1911), who is notable for having collected botanical specimens in the wheatbelt region of Western Australia. Goodeniaceae is a family (biology), family of flowering plants in the Order (biology), order Asterales. It contains about 404 species in twelve genera. The family is distributed mostly in Australia, except for the genus ''Scaevola (plant), Scaevola'', which is pantropical. Its species are found across most of Australia, being especially common in arid and semi-arid climates. Pollen is a powdery substance produced by seed plants. It consists of pollen grains (highly reduced microgametophytes), which produce male gametes (sperm cells). Coorow is a town in the Mid West region of Western Australia, north of Perth. History The townsite of Coorow was gazetted in 1893. Its name is derived from the Aboriginal name of a nearby spring, first recorded in 1872. The meaning of the name may be from the word "Curro", which is the Aboriginal word for a variety of ''Portulaca''; another source gives it as "many mists". The town experienced some flooding in 1918 following a deluge of of rain overnight. The Moore River broke its banks and caused much more severe flooding downstream at Moora. Beard's Provinces
The ''botanical provinces of Western Australia (or Beard's Provinces)'' delineate "natural" phytogeographic regions of WA, based on climate and types of vegetation. John Stanley Beard, in "Plant Life of Western Australia" (p. 29-37) gives a short history of the various mappings.
