The 1924 match for Dame Nellie Melba's Appeal for Limbless Soldiers, informally known as the 1924 Championship of Victoria, was an Australian rules football exhibition match played on 4 October 1924 between the Essendon Football Club and the Footscray Football Club – who were that season's premiers of the Australian Football League, Victorian Football League (VFL) and Victorian Football Association (VFA), respectively. Footscray recorded an upset victory against Essendon by 28 points, giving the VFA one of its most significant victories, on-field or off-field, against its stronger-rival competition. The match raised £2,800 (~A$249,500 in 2022 terms) for the fund. Francis Gregory Stockdale (30 July 1899 – 14 May 1949) was an Australian rules footballer who played with Essendon in the Victorian Football League (VFL) during the 1920s. George Shorten
George William "Tich" Shorten (19 March 1901 – 26 June 1973) was an Australian rules footballer who played for Essendon in the VFL during the 1920s. Shorten was the lightest player in Essendon's famed "Mosquito Fleet", with estimates on his weight ranging from 47 to 51 kg, making him the lightest player in league history. Although primarily a rover he was also seen on the half forward flanks, where he played the 1923 VFL Grand Final and was named "Best on Ground". He also participated in Essendon's premiership the following season and in 1925 represented Victoria in three interstate matches. Charlie May (footballer)
Charles Francis "Chooka" May (17 February 1899 – 2 May 1989) was an Australian rules footballer who played with and coached Essendon in the Victorian Football League (VFL). He was the father of double Essendon premiership player Wally May. A centreman in his playing days, May was a member of Essendon's back to back premiership sides of 1923 and 1924. His last game of football was in the 1926 finals series where Essendon fell a goal short of qualifying for the Grand Final and May ended up with a suspension for striking Bob Corbett of Melbourne. William Roy Laing (4 April 1893 – 11 April 1972) was an Australian rules footballer who played for Essendon in the Victorian Football League (VFL) before and after the First World War. Laing, originally from Western Australia, was recruited to Essendon from the Beverley Juniors in Richmond. Francis William Maher (22 September 1895 – 7 November 1976) was a decorated Australian soldier who served in the First AIF, and was an Australian footballer and coach in the Victorian Football League (VFL) and the Victorian Football Association (VFA). Thomas Joseph Cullinan Fitzmaurice (7 July 1898 – 25 December 1977) was an Australian rules footballer in the (then) Victorian Football League (VFL). Football A brilliant centre-half-back, he commenced his career with Essendon Football Club 1918. Transferred to Sydney in 1921 with his employment, Fitzmaurice played that season in the local competition and captained New South Wales against Victoria and Tasmania. He rejoined Essendon in 1922 and later formed part of their very successful 1923 and 1924 premiership teams. In the famous Essendon "mosquito fleet" (so called because of the half-dozen players 168 cm or under), Fitzmaurice was the tallest member of the side at 189 cm. Rowland Hill Watt (17 July 1898 – 27 July 1970) was an Australian rules footballer who played for Essendon in the Victorian Football League (VFL). Watt arrived at Essendon from Rochester and spent a season with Essendon Association before joining their VFL club. He was one of the small players in the team which saw them called the 'Mosquito Fleet' and he was a member of their 1923 and 1924 premiership sides.
