Damaged Goods (1937 Film)
''Damaged Goods'' is a 1937 American drama film directed by Phil Goldstone and starring Pedro de Cordoba, Phyllis Barry and Douglas Walton.Schaefer p.194 It is based on the play ''Les Avariés'' by Eugène Brieux and the subsequent adapted novel ''Damaged Goods'' by Upton Sinclair. A silent film adaptation ''Damaged Goods'' had been made in 1914. The film's sets were designed by the art director Frank Dexter. Plot A young lawyer, engaged to the daughter of a Congressman, attends a party where he has a fling with another woman. Two weeks later he suspects that he has contracted syphilis from her. Phil Goldstone (1893–1963) was a Polish-born American film producer and film director, director. He was also a real estate developer in Palm Springs, California, Palm Springs. Dorothy Short
Dorothy Short (June 29, 1915 – June 4, 1963) was an American film actress, mainly in low-budget Westerns and serials in the 1930s and 1940s. A native of Philadelphia, Short was the daughter of Mrs. E. M. Short. She began working in films for Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer in 1933 on a trial basis. In November 1933, a court in California approved a seven-year contract, with options, between the 18-year-old actress and the studio. Short married actor Dave O'Brien in 1936, the same year they appeared together in the low-budget exploitation cheapie ''Reefer Madness'', which in modern times has become a well-known cult film. She also appeared in another anti marijuana film ''Assassin of Youth'' in 1937. She often appeared alongside her husband in various 'B' pictures and the Pete Smith series of comedy shorts, in which O'Brien played the lead on many occasions during the 1940s. Biography Meyer belonged to a German family that was comparable to the Barrymore family in America. At age 3 she debuted on stage with her father's stock company. She went on to perform in operettas and plays in Amsterdam, Berlin, Dresden, Vienna, and other cities in Europe. She sang for Austria's emperor and Kaiser Wilhelm, and she starred in ''The Merry Widow'' for the Count of Luxembourg. Her early film efforts came in films like '' De jantjes'' (1922) and ''Die Königsloge'' (1929). Meyer came to the United States as the star of an operetta company. Clarence Hummel Wilson (November 17, 1876 – October 5, 1941) was an American character actor. Career Wilson appeared in nearly 200 movies between 1920 and 1941, mostly in supporting roles as an old miser or grouch. He had supporting roles in films like ''The Front Page'' (1931; as Sheriff Pinky), ''Ruggles of Red Gap'' (1935) and '' You Can't Take It With You'' (1938). Wilson also played in several ''Our Gang'' comedies, most notably as Mr. Crutch in ''Shrimps for a Day'' and school board chairman Alonzo Pratt in '' Come Back, Miss Pipps'', his final film. Esther Dale (November 10, 1885 – July 23, 1961) was an American actress of the stage and screen. Early years Dale was born in Beaufort, South Carolina. She attended Leland and Gray Seminary in Townshend, Vermont. In Berlin, Germany, she studied music and enjoyed a successful career as a singer of ''lieder'' on the concert stage. Her singing career included appearances with the New York Philharmonic and the Boston Symphony Orchestra. At one point, Dale was head of Smith College's vocal department.
