DDR-Oberliga (women's Handball)
The Women's Handball DDR-Oberliga was the highest category in the championship for women's team handball, handball in East Germany. Founded in 1951, 41 editions took place before the competition was disestablished in 1991 following the reunification of Germany. HC Leipzig, SC Leipzig was the championship's most successful with fifteen championships between 1953 and 1991, followed by Fortschritt Weissenfels and ASK Vorwärts Frankfurt, Vorwärts Frankfurt with six, TSC Berlin with four and Empor Rostock with three. The leading teams in the DDR-Oberliga were successful in international competitions. SC Leipzig won two EHF Women's Champions League, European Cups and one Women's EHF Cup, EHF Cup, TSC Berlin also won the European Cup and two Women's EHF Cup Winners' Cup, Cup Winners' Cups and ASK Vorwärts Frankfurt, Vorwärts Frankfurt clinched two EHF Cups, while Empor Rostock and SC Magdeburg also played European finals. Team Handball
Handball (also known as team handball, European handball or Olympic handball) is a team sport in which two teams of seven players each (six outcourt players and a goalkeeper) pass a ball using their hands with the aim of throwing it into the goal of the other team. A standard match consists of two periods of 30 minutes, and the team that scores more goals wins. Modern handball is played on a court of , with a goal in the middle of each end. The goals are surrounded by a zone where only the defending goalkeeper is allowed; goals must be scored by throwing the ball from outside the zone or while "diving" into it. The sport is usually played indoors, but outdoor variants exist in the forms of field handball, Czech handball (which were more common in the past) and beach handball. FC Hansa Rostock () is a German association football club based in the city of Rostock, Mecklenburg-Vorpommern. The club is also called as "the cog" because of its club crest. They have emerged as one of the most successful clubs from the former East Germany after German reunification and have made several appearances in the top-flight Bundesliga.
