DCKT Contemporary was a contemporary art gallery based in New York's Lower East Side. Founded in 2002, by Dennis Christie and Ken Tyburski, the gallery closed in 2014. The gallery represented emerging and established contemporary artists working in painting and sculpture to video art and photography. Contemporary Art Gallery
A contemporary art gallery is normally a commercial art gallery operated by an art dealer which specializes in displaying for sale contemporary art, usually new works of art by living artists. This approach has been called the "Castelli Method" after Leo Castelli, whose success was attributed to his active involvement in discovering and promoting emerging artists beginning in the late 1950s with Jasper Johns and Robert Rauschenberg. Lower East Side
The Lower East Side, sometimes abbreviated as LES, is a historic neighborhood in the southeastern part of Manhattan in New York City. It is located roughly between the Bowery and the East River from Canal to Houston streets. Helen Altman
Helen Altman (born 1958, in Tuscaloosa, Alabama, United States) is an artist based in Fort Worth, Texas. Altman received both her BFA, in 1981, and MA, in 1986, from the University of Alabama, Tuscaloosa. In 1989 she earned her MFA from the University of North Texas, Denton in 1989. Work Altman's earlier works include sculptures made from household appliances, and use humor to draw attention to more serious themes. For example, Weeping Iron is a leaking iron encased within a laundry basket resting upon an ironing board which is smothered by men's dress shirts. The absurdity of a crying iron is only the first layer of meaning, the second relating to a woman trapped under the weight of household duties. Altman's work includes quilted moving blankets imprinted with found images of nature. Castaneda/reiman
Charlie Castaneda (born 1970 San Diego, California) and Brody Reiman (born 1970 Bethlehem, Pennsylvania) are two contemporary artists who work together to form castaneda/reiman. Biographies The artists met each other while in college at Carnegie Mellon University in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, where they earned their BFAs in 1992. They went on to the University of California at Davis in Davis, California to earn their MFAs in 1994. Since then their work has been included in international group exhibitions in the Gallery for Contemporary Art in Tel Aviv, Israel (1999) and in the Seoul Museum of Art in Seoul, Korea (2003). Exene Cervenka
Exene Cervenka (born Christene Lee Cervenka; February 1, 1956) is an American singer, artist, and poet. She is best known for her work as a singer in the California punk rock band X. Music career The 21-year-old Cervenka met 23-year-old musician John Doe at a poetry workshop at the Beyond Baroque Foundation in Venice, California. Cervenka started working there. Billy Zoom (guitar) and John Doe (bass and vocals) founded X in 1977, with D.J. Bonebrake coming aboard as drummer. Doe asked Cervenka to join soon after as a co-lead vocalist, and the duo were also the band's primary songwriters. They released their debut album, ''Los Angeles,'' in 1980 and, over the next six years, five more albums. She learned to play guitar from Dave Alvin of The Blasters. Sophie Crumb
Sophia Violet "Sophie" Crumb (born September 27, 1981) is an American-French comics artist. She is the daughter of underground comix artists Robert Crumb and Aline Kominsky-Crumb. Crumb was born in Woodland, California, and lived in the nearby farming town of Winters with her parents until she was nine years old. In 1991, she relocated with her family to Sauve, a village in the south of France. Her parents reported that they wanted to remove her from the political conservatives and Christian fundamentalists of the United States. In a 2010 interview, Sophie told ''The Philadelphia Inquirer'' that her mother was afraid Sophie would "turn into a Valley girl". Lia Halloran
Lia Halloran (born 1977) is an American painter and photographer who lives and works in Los Angeles. Life and education Born in Chicago, IL., Lia Halloran grew up in the San Francisco Bay Area town of Pacifica, CA. Her youth was spent skateboarding and surfing, first given a skateboard at the age of five, and at the age of 15 was featured in Thrasher magazine. She developed an early love for science during high school at her first job, where she performed cow eye dissections and laser demonstrations at the Exploratorium in San Francisco. Her love for skateboarding, surfing, and science would later play an important role in her own understanding of art and creativity. Halloran's formal education began at UCLA, where she received a BFA in 1999, and then Yale, where she received a MFA in Painting in Printmaking in 2001. Ryan Humphrey (artist)
Ryan Humphrey (born 1971) is an American artist who currently lives and works in New York City. His work has been featured in the traveling exhibition ''Will Boys Be Boys?'' curated by Shamim Momim of the Whitney Museum of American Art. Humphrey's most recent solo exhibition, ''All of Nothing'', was at DCKT Contemporary. Humphrey was also a contestant in Season I of ''Top Design'', Bravo's reality show. Recently, Humphrey was included in the ''Queens International 4'' exhibition at the Queens Museum of Art. His large-scale installation, titled ''Fast Forward'' (2009), included BMX ramps adjacent to a wall-to-ceiling collection of trophies and customized BMX bikes, and he continued this theme in his installation ''Look for the dream that keeps coming back'' (2010) at Kunsthalle Galapagos.
