D. J. Mitchell (baseball)
William Douglas "D. J." Mitchell Jr. (born May 13, 1987) is an American former professional baseball pitcher. He played in Major League Baseball for the New York Yankees in 2012. Before embarking on his professional career, he played college baseball at Clemson University. Amateur career Mitchell graduated from North Forsyth High School in Winston-Salem, North Carolina, and attended Clemson University, where he played college baseball with the Clemson Tigers baseball team in the Atlantic Coast Conference (ACC) of the National Collegiate Athletic Association's Division I. In 2006, Mitchell's freshman year, he played as a right fielder. Mitchell began to pitch in 2007, his sophomore year at Clemson. After Clemson's 2007 season concluded, Mitchell pitched for the Bourne Braves of the Cape Cod Baseball League (CCBL), a collegiate summer baseball league. In baseball, the pitcher is the player who throws ("pitches") the baseball from the pitcher's mound toward the catcher to begin each play, with the goal of retiring a batter, who attempts to either make contact with the pitched ball or draw a walk. In the numbering system used to record defensive plays, the pitcher is assigned the number 1. Bourne Braves
The Bourne Braves are a collegiate summer baseball team based in Bourne, Massachusetts. The team is a member of the Cape Cod Baseball League (CCBL) and plays in the league's West Division. The Braves play their home games at Doran Park on the campus of Upper Cape Cod Regional Technical School in Bourne. The Braves are owned and operated by the non-profit Bourne Athletic Association. Bourne won its second CCBL championship of the modern era in 2022 by defeating the Brewster Whitecaps two games to none to win the best of three championship series. The Florida State League (FSL) is a Minor League Baseball league based in the state of Florida. In baseball statistics, earned run average (ERA) is the average of earned runs allowed by a pitcher per nine innings pitched (i.e. the traditional length of a game). It is determined by dividing the number of earned runs allowed by the number of innings pitched and multiplying by nine. Thus, a lower ERA is better. ''Faces in the Crowd'' is a long-running segment from ''Sports Illustrated''. Starting in the January 9, 1956, issue, the segment was originally titled ''These Faces in the Crowd.'' The predecessor to ''These Faces...'' was a segment called ''Pat on the Back''. It differed in that it did not just focus on unknown or amateur athletes. Contrary to ''Faces in the Crowd'', it featured professional athletes who set milestones and celebrities who undertook an athletic endeavor. Slight deviations from its basic format are rare.
