Mario D'Agata
Mario D'Agata (29 May 1926 – 4 April 2009) was an Italian professional boxer, who was the first, and so far only, deaf world champion in boxing. He was a lineal, European, and Italian bantamweight champion. Early life D'Agata was born on 29 May 1926, in Arezzo, Italy. He had a tough childhood as a consequence of his disabilities, the victim of taunting from fellow school children. Feeling the need to prove himself equal, he resorted to street fighting as a way to demonstrate his equality. D'Agata was one of three children (out of seven) to be born deaf in his family. His parents moved him from Tuscany to Rome at an early age, hoping to find doctors who would cure him. One afternoon he noticed a poster of a boxer adorning the door to a boxing gym. John D'Agata
John D’Agata (born 1975) is an American essayist. He is the author or editor of six books of nonfiction, including ''The Next American Essay'' (2003), ''The Lost Origins of the Essay'' (2009) and ''The Making of the American Essay''—all part of the trilogy of essay anthologies called "A New History of the Essay." He also wrote ''The Lifespan of a Fact'', "Halls of Fame," and "About a Mountain." D'Agata has received fellowships from the Guggenheim Foundation, the National Endowment for the Arts, the Howard Foundation and the Lannan Foundation. He is the M.F. Carpenter Professor of Writing in the Nonfiction Writing Program at the University of Iowa. Giuseppe D'Agata (11 January 1927 – 29 March 2011) was an Italian author, screenwriter and television writer. Life and career Born in Bologna, the son of a typographer, at 17 years old D'Agata became a militant in the partisan brigade "Matteotti Sap" and then in 1944 he enrolled the Socialist Party and later the Italian Socialist Party of Proletarian Unity.
