The Cả River ( Laotian: Nam Khan, Vietnamese: Sông Cả or better known as sông Lam or Lam River wikt:藍) is a river in mainland Southeast Asia. Etymology The name ''Cả'' means "first" in Vietnamese language, possibly alluding to the river's importance. Its other name ''Lam'' is Sino-Vietnamese reflex of Middle Chinese *''lɑm'', meaning "blue, indigo". History It originates in the Loi Mountains of Laos, crossing Laos's Xiangkhouang Province, Vietnam's Nghệ An and Hà Tĩnh provinces and empties into the Gulf of Tonkin, on the North Central Coast of Vietnam, after a 512 km journey. Hồng Lĩnh is a mountain range in Hà Tĩnh Province and Nghệ An Province, Vietnam. Hồng Lĩnh is the '' tên chữ'' Sino-Vietnamese name (literally "red mountain range"); the demotic '' tên nôm'' folk name is Rú Hống. The mountains famously have 99 peaks. Nguyễn Huệ built the Trung Đô Citadel on Hồng Lĩnh mountain. The mountains were the place of retirement of Nguyễn Du. Vinh () is the biggest city and economic and cultural center of north-central Vietnam. Vinh is the capital of Nghệ An Province, and is a key point in the East–West economic corridor linking Myanmar, Thailand, Laos and Vietnam. Bắc Trung Bộ (literally North Central Region, and often translated as North Central Coast) is one of the regions of Vietnam.
