Côle
The Côle (french: la Côle) is a long river in the Dordogne ''département'', south-central France. It rises near ''le Châtenet'', a hamlet in Firbeix. It flows generally southwest. It is a left tributary of the Dronne into which it flows between Condat-sur-Trincou and Brantôme. Saint-Pierre-de-Côle
Saint-Pierre-de-Côle (, literally ''Saint-Pierre of Côle''; Limousin: ''Sent Peir de Còla'') is a commune in the Dordogne department in Nouvelle-Aquitaine in southwestern France. Geography The river Côle flows southwestward through the middle of the commune, crosses the village and forms part of the commune's south-western border. The village straddles the D 78 road from Brantôme to Saint-Jean-de-Côle. At the centre of the village is the village square with an ancient Romanesque church which has been heavily restored and the cafe/restaurant 'La Marmite'. There is also a post office and a bakery in the village. The village festival takes place on the first weekend in August, and there are fireworks on the river. Geography The village lies on the right bank of the Trincou, which flows southwest through the northern part of the commune, before to flow into the Côle. La Chapelle-Faucher
La Chapelle-Faucher (; oc, La Chapela Fauchier) is a commune in the Dordogne department in Nouvelle-Aquitaine in southwestern France. This small but quaint rural French village has a Romanesque-style church, Notre Dame de l'Assomption built in the 12th century, a rambling ancient chateau overlooking the Cole River built in the 13th century (some of which has been restored and used for wedding receptions and other events), a kindergarten and a town hall. La Chapelle-Faucher is set above the river Côle, a tributary of the Dronne river which runs through the nearby town of Brantôme. History In the 14th century, the entire town was burnt to the ground during the Hundred Years' War. The village was gradually rebuilt, but religion's powerful hand frequented the village. On 2 July 1569, Protestants led by Gaspard de Coligny, rounded up 260 Catholic peasants (men, women and children), put into the chateau and brutally killed one by one during the wars of religion. From this fact came the name of the village of La Coquille. The church in La Coquille was on the route of Richard the Lionheart, was reinaugurated by him and welcomed him during his journey. Brantôme, Dordogne
Brantôme (; oc, Brantòsme) is a former commune in the Dordogne department in southwestern France. On 1 January 2016, it was merged into the new commune Brantôme en Périgord. It is the seat of the canton of Brantôme. , an old pilgrimage route to Santiago de Compostela, runs through Brantôme. The commune, which retains its picturesque atmosphere, is situated along the river Dronne. History The commune started to develop on an island encircled by a sweep of the river Dronne next to the Benedictine Abbey of Brantôme, which was founded in 769 by Charlemagne; according to legend he donated relics of Saint Sicarius (Sicaire), one of the infants in the Massacre of the Innocents. Those relics attracted pilgrims to the abbey, who also brought a certain affluence to Brantôme, but in spite of St. Sicaire's protection, the abbey was laid waste in 848 and in 857 by Viking rovers who had advanced along the Dordogne and Isle rivers to the Dronne.
