César Oudin
César Oudin (''c''. 1560 – 1 October 1625) was a French Hispanist, translator, paremiologist, grammarian and lexicographer. He translated into French ''La Galatea'' and the first part of ''Don Quixote''. He wrote a ''Grammaire espagnolle expliquée en Francois'' (1597) which, according to Amado Alonso, was the model for most grammars written later in other countries such as those by Heinrich Doergangk, Lorenzo Franciosini, Francisco Sobrino and Jerónimo de Texeda, among others. His dictionary ''Tesoro de las dos lenguas francesa y española'' (1607) is based on literary texts and was later used by John Minsheu, Lorenzo Franciosini Lorenzo Franciosini di Castelfiorentino (* Castelfiorentino, ca. 1600 - † after 1645) was an Italian Hispanist, translator, lexicographer and grammarian from the 16th century. La Galatea
''La Galatea'' () was Miguel de Cervantes’ first book, published in 1585. Under the guise of pastoral characters, it is an examination of love and contains many allusions to contemporary literary figures. It enjoyed a modest success, but was not soon reprinted; its promised sequel was never published. Plot The main characters of the Galatea are Elicio and Erastro, best friends and both in love with Galatea. The novel opens with her and her best friend, Florisa, bathing, talking of love. Erastro and Elicio reveal to each other their desire for Galatea, but agree not to let it come between their friendship. Eventually, all four of them begin their journey to the wedding of Daranio and Silveria, along which, in the pastoral tradition, they encounter other characters who tell their own stories and often join the traveling group. Girolamo Vittori was an Italian Hispanist and lexicographer from the 17th century. John Stevens (translator)
John Stevens (c. 1662 – 1726) was an English captain, Hispanist and translator. He is known for his translation of ''Don Quixote'' in 1700. Life Stevens was born in London, where his father was a page to Catherine of Braganza, and was educated by Benedictines at Douai, around 1675. He was bilingual, speaking Spanish from infancy, presumably with his mother. He served in the forces sent to quell Monmouth's Rebellion, and went with Henry Hyde, 2nd Earl of Clarendon to Dublin in 1685. He then through the Hyde connection became a tax official at Welshpool. Roman catholic and Jacobite, he fought in the Irish Williamite War and was at the siege of Limerick. He kept a diary of the conflict. Before 1695 Stevens had settled again in London.
