Cân I Gymru
''Cân i Gymru'' (English: ''A Song for Wales'', ) is a Welsh television show broadcast on S4C annually. It was first introduced in 1969 when BBC Cymru wanted to enter the Eurovision Song Contest. It has taken place every year since, except in 1973. The winner of the contest represents Wales at the annual Pan Celtic Festival held in Ireland and is also awarded a cash prize (which varies from year to year). History ''Cân i Gymru'' was presented to Wales under the name ''Cân Disc a Dawn'', a competition based around the Welsh language pop music show ' (as seen on Victor Lewis Smith's '' TV Offal''), for the first time in 1969. At the time, Meredydd Evans, head of light entertainment at BBC Cymru Wales, hoped that the winning song would be able to compete in the Eurovision Song Contest, although the BBC in London decided in the end that only one song from Britain would compete. Elin Fflur
Elin Fflur Llewelyn Harvey (''née'' Jones; born 26 July 1984), known professionally as Elin Fflur, is a Welsh singer-songwriter, television and radio presenter. Early life Fflur was born in Llanfairpwllgwyngyll, Anglesey and was the oldest of three children of Gerallt and Nêst Jones. She was educated at Ysgol David Hughes secondary school in the town of Menai Bridge, and later at Bangor University. Fflur began taking part in local Eisteddfodau from the age of three and became a familiar name in National Eisteddfodau thereafter. She later studied criminology at university, but left after her first year. Her musical roots began with her mother, who was the lead vocalist of the Welsh-folk band Bran in their early, prog-rock releases. The band Bran became known for winning Cân i Gymru in 1978. Sain (record Label)
Sain (Welsh for ''Audio'', ), in full – ''Sain (Recordiau) Cyf.'' (Audio (Records) Ltd) is a Welsh record label, which took part in the Welsh folk revival. History Sain was founded in Cardiff in 1969 by singers and songwriters Dafydd Iwan and Huw Jones, and businessman Brian Morgan Edwards, as a home for Welsh-language rock and folk music, which was otherwise finding it difficult to 'break through' in the UK market. Sain is regarded as being the first Welsh record company to be self-sufficient in terms of independence from other British companies, and laid the foundation for subsequent Welsh labels. The company released its first single in October 1969, Huw Jones' "Dŵr" (Welsh for ''Water''), a song about the drowning of the Tryweryn Valley, in the north of Wales, to form Llyn Celyn reservoir. Newport ( cy, Casnewydd; ) is a city and county borough in Wales, situated on the River Usk close to its confluence with the Severn Estuary, northeast of Cardiff. Gai Toms
Gareth 'Gai' J Thomas 'Toms' (born 14 September 1976 in Bangor, Wales) is a Welsh singer-songwriter, musician, producer and actor. In 1992 he co-formed the popular Welsh ska-rock band Anweledig, which developed into one of Wales' top live party bands. From 1997 to 2007 he created an 'off the road' Welsh folk outfit Mim Twm Llai, releasing three albums on Recordiau Sain. Since 2008, he dropped the Mim Twm Llai pseudonym for his own lifelong nickname Gai Toms, performing solo on guitar or with his backing band. His latest album titled 'Orig', based on the life of Welsh wrestling legend Orig Williams (El Bandito), gave us Gai Toms a'r Banditos (Gai Toms & the Banditos). Cân i Gymru 2011 was the forty-second edition of S4C's Cân i Gymru, an annual Welsh singing contest. The 2011 was broadcast live on 6 March 2011 from the Pontrhydfendigaid Pavilion, Pontrhydfendigaid. The winner was given an invitation to represent Wales at the Pan Celtic Festival. The final was hosted by former winner Elin Fflur. Format S4C and Avanti invited composers and authors to send in their songs from 8 November 2010 and were given a closing date of 7 January 2011. The 8 finalists were announced on 22 February 2011. A panel of judges evaluated each entry before submitting a shortlist of eight songs to be performed live on the show. The winning composer(s)/author(s) were awarded a £7,500 prize and got an invitation to enter their song into the Pan Celtic Festival in Ireland. Cân i Gymru 2010 was the forty-first edition of S4C's Cân i Gymru, an annual Welsh singing contest. The 2010 edition was broadcast live on 28 February 2010 from Venue Cymru, Llandudno. The show was also available to watch online as well as a live radio commentary. The winner was given an invitation to represent Wales at the Pan Celtic Festival. Format S4C and Avanti invited composers and authors to send in their songs from 15 October 2009 and were given a closing date of 11 December 2009. Songs had to be submitted on a CD, cassette or MP3 file along with a submission form. Einir Dafydd
Einir Dafydd is a Welsh singer who won the third series of the television talent show Wawffactor and the 2007 Cân i Gymru (''A Song for Wales'') competition. Dafydd started her career as the lead singer in the band Garej Dolwen, but first came to prominence after winning the Wawffactor competition televised on S4C in March 2006. This provided the opportunity for exposure on other S4C television shows, such as Wedi 7 and Noson Lawen, as well as the chance to record a CD. Her debut EP, titled Y Garreg Las (''The Blue Rock'') was launched in June 2006 at Theatr y Gromlech, Crymych, and featured three songs and a music video. Bryn Fôn
Bryn Fôn (born 27 August 1954) is a Welsh actor and singer-songwriter. He also became the first ever artist to play live on BBC Radio Cymru in 1977. Biography Bryn Fôn was born in Llanllyfni, Caernarfonshire. He attended Ysgol Gynradd Llanllyfni and Ysgol Dyffryn Nantlle before going on to study physical exercise and environmental studies at college. He began his career in entertainment by taking part in the opera Dic Penderyn in 1977. He formed the musical group Crysbas after leaving college, and Sobin a'r Smaeliaid in 1988. He was voted the ''hunk of the month'' in '' She'' magazine during the 1980s. He began releasing albums with his band under his own name in 1994. Iwcs A Doyle
Iwcs a Doyle were a popular Welsh-language two-piece band. Iwan "Iwcs" Roberts and John Doyle formed the duo Iwcs a Doyle in 1995. They rose to fame following their success with the song “Cerrig yr Afon” in the annually held “ Cân i Gymru” (Song for Wales) competition in 1996.
