Cyriel Barbary
Cyrillus-Camillus Barbary (4 August 1899 – 16 September 2004) was the last known Belgian veteran of the First World War. He was born in Klerken in West Flanders. He served on the Western Front in the (''2de Linieregiment'') for the last months of the war, between May 1918 and January 1919. Barbary worked as a mason and emigrated to the United States with his wife Emma in 1923. The couple had three children. He visited Belgium for the last time in 1997. As a result of his emigration, he was ignored by official commemorations of the last surviving veterans in Belgium. Paul Ooghe was widely reported to have been the last surviving Belgian veteran at the time of his death in 2001. Barbary died in Detroit on 16 September 2004 at the age of 105. Klerken
Klerken is a village in Province of West Flanders in Belgium. It forms a part of the commune of in Houthulst. It was first mentioned in a letter by Arnulphus the Elder from 961 and the village's archives survive from as early as 1653. Paul Ooghe
Paul Ooghe (17 May 1899 – 8 September 2001) was a Belgian soldier who, and at the time of his death, was incorrectly believed to be the last surviving Belgian soldier to have seen combat in World War I. The actual last surviving veteran, Cyrillus-Camillus Barbary, who had emigrated to the United States, died in 2004. World War I service In 1916, he escaped from German-occupied Belgium and traveled to the Netherlands, England, and finally France to join the Belgian Army which was fighting at a northern section of the Western Front, known as the Yser Front. At the age of 16, Ooghe lied about his age in order to enlist. He first joined the cavalry (5e régiment des Lanciers), then the grenadiers (1er régiment des Grenadiers). Florence Green, a British citizen who served in the Allied armed forces as a Royal Air Force ( WRAF) service member, is generally considered to have been the last verified veteran of the war at her death on 4 February 2012, aged 110. A bricklayer, which is related to but different from a mason, is a craftsman and tradesman who lays bricks to construct brickwork. The terms also refer to personnel who use blocks to construct blockwork walls and other forms of masonry. In British and Australian English, a bricklayer is colloquially known as a "brickie". A stone mason is one who lays any combination of stones, cinder blocks, and bricks in construction of building walls and other works. Bricklaying is a part of masonry.
